How the Southampton quiz is checked
Every question above was written by hand and verified before it went live.
Every Southampton question here was checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

About the Southampton quiz
Southampton are the Saints, and the name is literal: the club was founded in 1885 by members of the St Mary's Church of England Young Men's Association, and the ground they moved to in 2001 carries the same name. Few English clubs wear their origin quite so plainly.
The defining day came on 1 May 1976, when a Second Division Southampton beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final through Bobby Stokes. Lawrie McMenemy's side had no business winning it, which is exactly why it is still the first thing anyone mentions. Eight years later the same manager took them to second in the old First Division, the highest the club has ever finished.
Then there is the academy, which has done more for English football than most clubs' first teams. Alan Shearer scored a hat-trick on his full debut at 17. Theo Walcott left for Arsenal at 16. Gareth Bale began as a left-back at The Dell. Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Ward-Prowse all came through the same doors.
And Matt Le Tissier stayed, which is the other half of the story — one club, one career, and 47 penalties scored from 48 taken. Southampton have been relegated, gone into administration and dropped to the third tier since, but the identity has never really changed.
The Southampton set runs the full range — easy starters, a medium core, and hard questions a devoted fan has to think about.
