What the Bournemouth quiz covers

Every question is written and checked by football fans — soccer, if you're reading this in the US — across the topics that decide a real Bournemouth expert:

This is one set from a bank of thousands of questions spanning 72 clubs, every major league and eight decades of football.

How the Bournemouth quiz is checked

Every question above was written by hand and verified before it went live.

All 24 Bournemouth questions were checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

Bournemouth quiz — FAQ

What is AFC Bournemouth's greatest achievement?
Winning the 2014-15 Championship title to reach England's top flight for the first time in the club's history — the final step of Eddie Howe's climb from League Two. The 1986-87 Third Division title, the first divisional championship the club ever won, runs it close.
Who is AFC Bournemouth's most famous player?
Ted MacDougall, whose nine goals in an 11-0 FA Cup win over Margate in 1971 set a record, is the most celebrated. At Dean Court itself, few are loved like Steve Fletcher, the striker whose two spells made him the club's all-time record appearance-maker.
Is the Bournemouth quiz free to play?
Yes — the sample questions are free in your browser with no sign-up, and the full Bournemouth question bank is in the Ball IQ app along with daily challenges and multiplayer.
How hard is the Bournemouth quiz?
It runs from easy (what's the club's nickname?) to hard (how many points were Bournemouth docked in 2008-09?). The mix means casual fans and lifelong Cherries both get a real test.
About the Bournemouth quiz

AFC Bournemouth began life in 1899 as Boscombe FC, took the name Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic on joining the Football League in 1923, and have long been known simply as the Cherries. Few clubs wear their identity so plainly: red-and-black striped shirts modelled on AC Milan's, introduced in the early 1970s; a crest showing a player heading a football; and a home ground everyone still calls by its traditional name, Dean Court. This free Bournemouth quiz covers the whole story — the FA Cup giant-killings, the Great Escape of 2009, and Eddie Howe's climb from League Two to the Premier League.

For most of their history the Cherries were a lower-league club with a habit of embarrassing bigger ones. The Third Division side of 1956-57 knocked out Wolves and Tottenham on the way to the FA Cup quarter-finals; Ted MacDougall scored nine goals in a single tie in 1971, an 11-0 rout of Margate that set an FA Cup record; and in January 1984 Harry Redknapp's team beat cup holders Manchester United 2-0. The Third Division title of 1986-87 was the first divisional championship in the club's history. Then came the hard road back: docked 17 points after exiting administration in 2008-09, Bournemouth were all but saved by Steve Fletcher — the much-loved striker who holds the club's all-time appearance record across two spells — scoring the decisive goal against Grimsby in April 2009. Eddie Howe, a former Bournemouth defender, took it from there, guiding the club from League Two all the way to the 2014-15 Championship title and a first-ever top-flight season in 2015-16.

The questions range across the eras. You'll meet the famous 4-3 at Dean Court in December 2016, when Bournemouth came from 3-1 down to beat Liverpool; the club-record fee of around £25m paid to Levante for Jefferson Lerma in 2018; Callum Wilson scoring on his England debut against the USA that November; and Ryan Fraser's 14 assists in 2018-19, one of the highest tallies in the division. The bruises are in here too — the 9-0 defeat by Liverpool in August 2022 that equalled the Premier League's record scoreline, and Scott Parker winning promotion back to the Premier League in 2022 only to be sacked early the following season. Difficulty climbs from easy openers about nicknames and famous wins to hard deep cuts about points deductions, name changes and Howe's brief 2011 spell at Burnley, so casual fans and lifelong Cherries both get a proper test.

Every question comes with a short explained answer, so even a miss leaves you knowing more — why the club began 2008-09 seventeen points down, or which club those red-and-black stripes were modelled on. Play the sample set below free in your browser, no sign-up needed. When you want the full Bournemouth quiz — plus daily challenges, leaderboards and multiplayer — it's all in the Ball IQ app.
