AS Monaco Quiz

AS Monaco were founded on 23 August 1924 and are unlike anyone else in European football: a club from a sovereign principality of barely two square kilometres that has spent its entire history competing in the French league system. Home since January 1985 has been the Stade Louis II, built on land reclaimed from the sea, and the diagonal red-and-white shirt is one of the game's most recognisable. The managers alone make a quiz. Lucien Leduc took a newly promoted side straight to the 1977-78 title. Arsène Wenger won the championship in his first season in 1987-88 and stayed until 1994, bringing George Weah over from Tonnerre Yaoundé in 1988 and Jürgen Klinsmann from Internazionale in 1992. Jean Tigana's 1996-97 champions had Fabien Barthez in goal and Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet and Emmanuel Petit in front of him. Then Didier Deschamps, in charge from 2001 to 2005, won the 2003 Coupe de la Ligue 4-1 against Sochaux and took Monaco to the 2004 Champions League final, knocking Real Madrid out on away goals along the way — Fernando Morientes, on loan from the very club he eliminated, finishing as the competition's top scorer with nine — before José Mourinho's Porto won the final 3-0 in Gelsenkirchen. Europe had come close before too: a 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen in the 1992 Cup Winners' Cup final, and a 1997-98 Champions League semi-final lost to Juventus after Alessandro Del Piero's hat-trick in Turin.

The modern era is a story of collapse and reinvention. Monaco were relegated to Ligue 2 in 2010-11, their first drop out of the top flight in 35 years, and were bottom of the second division when Dmitry Rybolovlev bought a two-thirds stake in December 2011. Claudio Ranieri won the Ligue 2 title at the first attempt in 2012-13, Radamel Falcao arrived from Atlético Madrid as the marquee signing of the spending that followed, and by 2016-17 Leonardo Jardim's team were champions of France — 107 goals, 95 points, eight clear of Paris Saint-Germain, with Manchester City beaten on away goals and Borussia Dortmund 6-3 on the way to a Champions League semi-final. At the centre of it was a teenager who had broken Thierry Henry's club record as Monaco's youngest first-team player in December 2015, aged 16 years and 347 days, and who left for Paris Saint-Germain the summer the title was won. Older heroes hold up the other end: Jean-Luc Ettori made 755 appearances between 1975 and 1994 without ever playing for another club.
