What the AS Monaco quiz covers

Every question is written and checked by football fans — soccer, if you're reading this in the US — across the topics that decide a real AS Monaco expert:

This is one set from a bank of thousands of questions spanning 72 clubs, every major league and eight decades of football.

How the AS Monaco quiz is checked

Every question above was written by hand and verified before it went live.

All 37 AS Monaco questions were checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

How many French league titles have Monaco won?
Eight — in 1961, 1963, 1978, 1982, 1988, 1997, 2000 and 2017. The most recent came under Leonardo Jardim, whose side scored 107 goals and finished eight points clear of Paris Saint-Germain.
Which famous players made their name at Monaco?
Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet both broke through under Jean Tigana in the 1996-97 title season, George Weah's European career began there in 1988, and Kylian Mbappé became the club's youngest ever first-team player in December 2015.
Is the AS Monaco quiz free to play?
Yes — the sample questions are free in your browser with no sign-up, and the full AS Monaco question bank is in the Ball IQ app along with daily challenges, leaderboards and multiplayer.
How hard is the AS Monaco quiz?
It runs from easy (which country's league do Monaco play in?) to hard (who managed the 1977-78 champions?). The mix means casual fans and Louis II regulars both get a real test.
About the AS Monaco quiz

AS Monaco were founded on 23 August 1924 and are unlike anyone else in European football: a club from a sovereign principality of barely two square kilometres that has spent its entire history competing in the French league system. Home since January 1985 has been the Stade Louis II, built on land reclaimed from the sea, and the diagonal red-and-white shirt is one of the game's most recognisable. This free AS Monaco quiz covers all of it — eight French championships in 1961, 1963, 1978, 1982, 1988, 1997, 2000 and 2017, the 1960 Coupe de France win over Saint-Étienne that brought the club's first major trophy, and the double completed in 1962-63.

The managers alone make a quiz. Lucien Leduc took a newly promoted side straight to the 1977-78 title. Arsène Wenger won the championship in his first season in 1987-88 and stayed until 1994, bringing George Weah over from Tonnerre Yaoundé in 1988 and Jürgen Klinsmann from Internazionale in 1992. Jean Tigana's 1996-97 champions had Fabien Barthez in goal and Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet and Emmanuel Petit in front of him. Then Didier Deschamps, in charge from 2001 to 2005, won the 2003 Coupe de la Ligue 4-1 against Sochaux and took Monaco to the 2004 Champions League final, knocking Real Madrid out on away goals along the way — Fernando Morientes, on loan from the very club he eliminated, finishing as the competition's top scorer with nine — before José Mourinho's Porto won the final 3-0 in Gelsenkirchen. Europe had come close before too: a 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen in the 1992 Cup Winners' Cup final, and a 1997-98 Champions League semi-final lost to Juventus after Alessandro Del Piero's hat-trick in Turin.

The modern era is a story of collapse and reinvention. Monaco were relegated to Ligue 2 in 2010-11, their first drop out of the top flight in 35 years, and were bottom of the second division when Dmitry Rybolovlev bought a two-thirds stake in December 2011. Claudio Ranieri won the Ligue 2 title at the first attempt in 2012-13, Radamel Falcao arrived from Atlético Madrid as the marquee signing of the spending that followed, and by 2016-17 Leonardo Jardim's team were champions of France — 107 goals, 95 points, eight clear of Paris Saint-Germain, with Manchester City beaten on away goals and Borussia Dortmund 6-3 on the way to a Champions League semi-final. At the centre of it was a teenager who had broken Thierry Henry's club record as Monaco's youngest first-team player in December 2015, aged 16 years and 347 days, and who left for Paris Saint-Germain the summer the title was won. Older heroes hold up the other end: Jean-Luc Ettori made 755 appearances between 1975 and 1994 without ever playing for another club.

Every question comes with a short explained answer, so even a miss teaches you the detail that makes it stick — which club Trezeguet arrived from, or how many goals the 2017 champions scored. Play the sample set below free in your browser, no sign-up needed. When you want the full AS Monaco quiz — plus daily challenges, leaderboards and multiplayer — it's all in the Ball IQ app.
