What the Valencia quiz covers

Every question is written and checked by football fans — soccer, if you're reading this in the US — across the topics that decide a real Valencia expert:

This is one set from a bank of thousands of questions spanning 72 clubs, every major league and eight decades of football.

How the Valencia quiz is checked

Every question above was written by hand and verified before it went live.

All 35 Valencia questions were checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

Valencia quiz — FAQ

What is Valencia's greatest achievement?
The 2003-04 double under Rafael Benítez — a sixth La Liga title alongside the UEFA Cup, won 2-0 against Marseille in Gothenburg. The two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups of 1962 and 1963 and the 1980 Cup Winners' Cup win over Arsenal run it close.
Have Valencia ever won the Champions League?
No — they reached the final in both 2000 and 2001 under Héctor Cúper and lost each time, 3-0 to Real Madrid in Paris and then on penalties to Bayern Munich at the San Siro, where Oliver Kahn saved three.
Is the Valencia quiz free to play?
Yes — the sample questions are free in your browser with no sign-up, and the full Valencia question bank is in the Ball IQ app along with daily challenges, leaderboards and multiplayer.
How hard is the Valencia quiz?
It runs from easy (which animal is on the crest?) to hard (who holds the club appearance record?). The mix means casual fans and Mestalla regulars both get a proper test.
About the Valencia quiz

Valencia CF were founded in March 1919, moved into Mestalla in 1923 and have been there ever since — a steep, loud, old-fashioned ground pressed right up against the pitch, and one of the most intimidating in Spain. This free Valencia quiz covers the whole story: the bat on the crest, borrowed from the coat of arms of the city itself, the six league titles won in 1942, 1944, 1947, 1971, 2002 and 2004, and the European nights that made Los Che a name across the continent. The city derby against Levante and the regional rivalry with Villarreal are in here too. If Mestalla means something to you, this is your quiz.

The European story starts early and never really stops. Valencia won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1962 and retained it in 1963, then beat Arsenal in Brussels to lift the 1980 Cup Winners' Cup after a goalless 120 minutes. Under Héctor Cúper the club reached back-to-back Champions League finals and lost both — 3-0 to Real Madrid in Paris in 2000, the first all-Spanish European Cup final, and then on penalties to Bayern Munich at the San Siro in 2001, where Oliver Kahn saved three spot-kicks and Mauricio Pellegrino's was the last of them. Redemption came under Rafael Benítez in 2003-04: the league title and the UEFA Cup in the same season, Marseille beaten 2-0 in the Gothenburg final through a Vicente Rodríguez penalty and a Mista finish. Claudio Ranieri, back for a second spell, then added the UEFA Super Cup against Porto.

Expect the full spread — transfers, managers, records and cult heroes. Mario Kempes scored both goals to beat Real Madrid in the 1979 Copa del Rey final; Alfredo Di Stéfano took charge at Mestalla in 1970 and won the league in his first season; Fernando Gómez made more than 550 appearances between 1983 and 1998, a club record nobody has touched. The trophy years were built on Santiago Cañizares in goal, Roberto Ayala at the back and the Rubén Baraja-David Albelda double pivot in midfield, with Pablo Aimar arriving from River Plate in 2001 to provide the imagination. Transfers run from Gaizka Mendieta's 2001 move to Lazio and John Carew's arrival from Rosenborg, to David Villa's 129 goals after signing from Real Zaragoza in 2005 and David Silva's 2010 departure for Manchester City. The modern era is here as well: Unai Emery's three consecutive third-place finishes, Ronald Koeman's 2008 Copa del Rey, Peter Lim's 2014 takeover, and the 2-1 win over Barcelona in Seville that won the 2019 Copa del Rey in the club's centenary season.

Every question comes with a short explained answer, so even a miss teaches you the detail that makes it stick — why the ground is called Mestalla, or what happened to the last penalty in Milan. Play the sample set below free in your browser, no sign-up needed. When you want the full Valencia quiz — plus daily challenges, leaderboards and multiplayer — it's all in the Ball IQ app.
