Valencia CF were founded in March 1919, moved into Mestalla in 1923 and have been there ever since — a steep, loud, old-fashioned ground pressed right up against the pitch, and one of the most intimidating in Spain. The European story starts early and never really stops. Valencia won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1962 and retained it in 1963, then beat Arsenal in Brussels to lift the 1980 Cup Winners' Cup after a goalless 120 minutes. Under Héctor Cúper the club reached back-to-back Champions League finals and lost both — 3-0 to Real Madrid in Paris in 2000, the first all-Spanish European Cup final, and then on penalties to Bayern Munich at the San Siro in 2001, where Oliver Kahn saved three spot-kicks and Mauricio Pellegrino's was the last of them. Redemption came under Rafael Benítez in 2003-04: the league title and the UEFA Cup in the same season, Marseille beaten 2-0 in the Gothenburg final through a Vicente Rodríguez penalty and a Mista finish. Claudio Ranieri, back for a second spell, then added the UEFA Super Cup against Porto.

Mario Kempes scored both goals to beat Real Madrid in the 1979 Copa del Rey final; Alfredo Di Stéfano took charge at Mestalla in 1970 and won the league in his first season; Fernando Gómez made more than 550 appearances between 1983 and 1998, a club record nobody has touched. The trophy years were built on Santiago Cañizares in goal, Roberto Ayala at the back and the Rubén Baraja-David Albelda double pivot in midfield, with Pablo Aimar arriving from River Plate in 2001 to provide the imagination. Transfers run from Gaizka Mendieta's 2001 move to Lazio and John Carew's arrival from Rosenborg, to David Villa's 129 goals after signing from Real Zaragoza in 2005 and David Silva's 2010 departure for Manchester City. The modern era is here as well: Unai Emery's three consecutive third-place finishes, Ronald Koeman's 2008 Copa del Rey, Peter Lim's 2014 takeover, and the 2-1 win over Barcelona in Seville that won the 2019 Copa del Rey in the club's centenary season.
