What the Cardiff City quiz covers

Every question is written and checked by football fans — soccer, if you're reading this in the US — across the topics that decide a real Cardiff City expert:

This is one set from a bank of thousands of questions spanning 72 clubs, every major league and eight decades of football.

How the Cardiff City quiz is checked

Every question above was written by hand and verified before it went live.

Every Cardiff City question here was checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

Cardiff City quiz — FAQ

Why are Cardiff City called the Bluebirds?
From the blue home shirt and the bluebird that has appeared on the club badge for over a century. That history is why the 2012 change to red shirts under owner Vincent Tan caused such anger; blue was restored in 2015.
Did Cardiff City really win the FA Cup?
Yes, in 1927, beating Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley. It is the only time the FA Cup has been won by a club from outside England, and the winning goal came when Arsenal's Welsh goalkeeper Dan Lewis let the ball squirm under him.
Why do Cardiff City play in the English league?
For historical reasons, like Swansea City and Wrexham. Welsh clubs joined the English pyramid long before a national Welsh league existed, and they remained there.
Who are Cardiff City's rivals?
Swansea City. The South Wales derby is contested by clubs around 40 miles apart and is among the most heavily policed fixtures in British football.
About the Cardiff City quiz

Cardiff City are the Bluebirds, and 1927 is the year that defines them. Beating Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley made them the only club ever to take the FA Cup out of England — a Welsh club winning the English cup, decided by a Welsh goalkeeper letting a routine shot squirm under his body.

Ninian Park was home for 99 years until the move to the Cardiff City Stadium in 2009. Like Wrexham and Swansea, Cardiff play in the English pyramid, a historical accident that has left Welsh clubs competing for English trophies for over a century.

The modern era has been turbulent. Promotion to the Premier League arrived in 2013 under Malky Mackay, and again in 2018 under Neil Warnock, whose eighth career promotion it was. Between them came the most disliked rebrand in British football, when owner Vincent Tan changed the home shirt from blue to red in 2012. Blue was restored in 2015.

And the rivalry with Swansea City is genuinely fierce — 40 miles apart, and one of the most heavily policed fixtures in Britain.

The Cardiff City set runs the full range — easy starters, a medium core, and hard questions a devoted fan has to think about.
