About the Schalke 04 quiz

FC Schalke 04 were founded in 1904 in Gelsenkirchen, in the heart of the Ruhr coalfield, and play in royal blue and white. This free Schalke quiz covers the whole story: Die Knappen — the miners — the enormous, devoted support, and one of the great rivalries in world football. If you know your Schalke, this is your test.

Schalke were German football's dominant force in its early decades, winning seven national championships between 1934 and 1958. Their greatest modern night came in 1997, when the side known as the 'Eurofighters' won the UEFA Cup, beating Inter Milan on penalties. They have won the DFB-Pokal several times and have called the Arena AufSchalke home since 2001. Nothing defines the club like the Revierderby against Borussia Dortmund, the Ruhr derby that divides the region — and after decades in the top flight, Schalke were relegated from the Bundesliga in 2021.

Expect questions on the miners' heritage, the 1997 European triumph, the great sides and the Dortmund rivalry. You'll be asked which competition the Eurofighters won, what Die Knappen refers to, and which club contest the Revierderby. Difficulty climbs from easy openers about the colours and the city to genuinely hard deep cuts about specific finals, scorers and seasons.

Every question comes with a short explained answer, so even a miss teaches you the detail that makes it stick. Play the sample set below free in your browser, no sign-up needed. The full Schalke 04 quiz — plus daily challenges, leaderboards and multiplayer — is in the Ball IQ app.
