What the Wolves quiz covers

Every question is written and checked by football fans — soccer, if you're reading this in the US — across the topics that decide a real Wolves expert:

This is one set from a bank of thousands of questions spanning 72 clubs, every major league and eight decades of football.

How the Wolves quiz is checked

Every question above was written by hand and verified before it went live.

All 27 Wolves questions were checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

Wolves quiz — FAQ

What is Wolves' greatest achievement?
Three First Division titles, all won in the 1950s under Stan Cullis — the same era that produced the celebrated 1954 floodlit win over Budapest Honvéd, when Wolves came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and earned 'Champions of the World' headlines.
Who is Wolves' most famous player?
Billy Wright — the one-club captain who became the first footballer in the world to win 100 international caps, all for England. Steve Bull, the club's all-time leading goalscorer, runs him closest in Molineux affection.
Is the Wolves quiz free to play?
Yes — the sample questions are free in your browser with no sign-up, and the full Wolves question bank is in the Ball IQ app along with daily challenges and multiplayer.
How hard is the Wolves quiz?
It runs from easy (which colour pairs with black on the shirt?) to hard (who holds the club record of 609 appearances?). Difficulty is mixed, so casual fans and Molineux regulars both get a proper test.
About the Wolves quiz

Wolverhampton Wanderers were there at the very beginning — one of the twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888 — and they have called Molineux home since 1889, wearing old gold and black like nobody else in the game. This free Wolves quiz covers the whole story: the imperious Stan Cullis side of the 1950s, the famous floodlit nights, the fall and rise that followed, and the modern Premier League era shaped by Nuno Espírito Santo's promotion winners. If the old gold means something to you, this is your quiz.

The golden age arrived in the 1950s, when Stan Cullis's team won all three of the club's First Division titles, captained by Billy Wright — the one-club man who became the first footballer in the world to win 100 international caps. In 1954, under the Molineux floodlights, Wolves came from 2-0 down to beat the Hungarian side Budapest Honvéd 3-2, a friendly so celebrated it prompted 'Champions of the World' headlines. There were cups too: the FA Cup in 1949, won 3-1 against Leicester City, and the 1980 League Cup, when a 1-0 win toppled Nottingham Forest, the reigning European champions. In between, Bill McGarry's side reached the first UEFA Cup final in 1972 — the first all-English European final, lost to Tottenham Hotspur — and lifted the 1974 League Cup. The modern era has its landmarks as well: a 3-0 play-off final win over Sheffield United in 2003 took Wolves into the Premier League for the first time, and the 2019-20 team reached a Europa League quarter-final before falling 1-0 to Sevilla.

Expect the full spread — transfers, records, managers and cult heroes like Derek Dougan, 'The Doog', the Northern Ireland forward who became a Molineux favourite in the late 1960s. Transfers run from the British record Wolves broke in 1979 to sign Andy Gray from Aston Villa, through João Moutinho's arrival from Monaco in 2018, to Diogo Jota's 2020 move to Liverpool, Fábio Silva's club-record signing the same year and Rúben Neves's record sale to Al-Hilal in 2023. Records mean Steve Bull, the all-time leading goalscorer, and Derek Parkin's 609 appearances. Managers span Major Frank Buckley — the 1930s innovator famous for promoting young players and for his controversial 'monkey gland' treatments — through Cullis and McGarry to Mick McCarthy's 2008-09 Championship winners and Nuno's 2017-18 title side. Difficulty climbs from easy openers about the colours and the name of the ground to hard deep cuts: which division Wolves were in when they won the 1908 FA Cup, and just how far three straight relegations dropped them in the mid-1980s.

Every question comes with a short explained answer, so even a miss teaches you something — which country Raúl Jiménez plays his international football for, or how a 2-0 lead in the 2019 FA Cup semi-final against Watford became a 3-2 defeat. Play the sample set below free in your browser, no sign-up needed. When you want the full Wolves quiz — plus daily challenges, leaderboards and multiplayer — it's all in the Ball IQ app.
