About the Aston Villa quiz

Aston Villa were founded in 1874 and were one of the twelve founding members of the Football League in 1888. This free Villa quiz covers the whole story: the claret and blue, Villa Park, a proud Victorian and Edwardian dominance, and the night in 1982 when Villa conquered Europe. If you know your Villa, this is your test.

That European Cup remains the peak. In 1982, Tony Barton's side beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in Rotterdam, Peter Withe scoring the only goal after reserve goalkeeper Nigel Spink came on early and produced the game of his life. Villa added the European Super Cup that year too. Across their history they have won the First Division seven times and the FA Cup and League Cup many times over, and under Unai Emery they returned to the Champions League in the 2024-25 season. The Second City derby against Birmingham City runs through it all.

Expect questions on the 1982 final, the club legends, the managers, and Villa's founding role in English league football. You'll be asked which German club Villa beat in Rotterdam, who scored the winner, and which local club are their fiercest rivals. Difficulty climbs from easy openers about Villa Park and the colours to genuinely hard deep cuts about specific finals, scorers and seasons.

Every question comes with a short explained answer, so even a miss teaches you the detail that makes it stick. Play the sample set below free in your browser, no sign-up needed. The full Aston Villa quiz — plus daily challenges, leaderboards and multiplayer — is in the Ball IQ app.
