About the Olympique Lyonnais quiz
Olympique Lyonnais were a second-division side when Jean-Michel Aulas arrived as president in 1987 with a plan he called 'OL – Europe'. Fourteen years later they won the first league title in the club's history, and then six more in a row. This free Lyon quiz covers the lot: Les Gones in their white shirts, the move from Gerland to the purpose-built Groupama Stadium in January 2016, the fiercest derby in France against Saint-Étienne 60km down the road, and the women's team whose eight UEFA Women's Champions League titles are more than any other club has won.
The dynasty is the heart of it. Lyon's first championship came in 2001-02, clinched on the final day at Gerland with a 3-1 win over RC Lens, who needed only a draw to be champions themselves — Jacques Santini's side took it instead. Seven consecutive titles followed, a Ligue 1 record, and the run ended with a domestic double: Alain Perrin's 2007-08 team added the Coupe de France, Karim Benzema's goal beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the Stade de France. The launchpad had come in 2001, when Lyon beat Monaco 2-1 after extra time to win the Coupe de la Ligue, their first major trophy in decades. Juninho Pernambucano, signed from Vasco da Gama that same year, captained the side through all of it and turned the dipping free-kick into a Lyon trademark; Grégory Coupet kept goal for every one of the seven titles before joining Atlético Madrid in 2008.
Europe brought the near-misses and the great upsets. PSV Eindhoven knocked Lyon out on penalties in the 2004-05 quarter-finals; in 2009-10 they beat Real Madrid 2-1 on aggregate before Bayern Munich, with an Ivica Olić hat-trick in the second leg, ended the run in the semi-finals; Ajax edged them out of the 2016-17 Europa League at the same stage. Then came Lisbon in 2020, where Rudi Garcia's side beat Manchester City 3-1 in the one-legged quarter-final with Moussa Dembélé scoring twice off the bench, before losing another semi-final to Bayern. The academy and the trading are just as much a part of the identity: Karim Benzema left for Real Madrid in 2009, Alexandre Lacazette scored 27 league goals to win the 2014-15 golden boot before joining Arsenal, Hugo Lloris went to Tottenham in 2012 and Tanguy Ndombele followed for a then club-record fee in 2019. Coming the other way were Sonny Anderson from Barcelona in 1999, Michael Essien from Bastia in 2003, Lisandro López from Porto and Memphis Depay from Manchester United. And the club's all-time leading scorer still belongs to an earlier age: Fleury Di Nallo, 222 goals, 'le Petit Prince de Gerland'.
Every question comes with a short explained answer, so even a miss teaches you the detail that makes it stick — who was in charge for the first title, or which club Juninho arrived from.
