A year later in Amsterdam they beat Madrid themselves, 5-3, a 20-year-old Eusébio striking twice to out-duel a Ferenc Puskás hat-trick in one of the greatest finals ever played. Then Guttmann, refused a pay rise, walked out — and legend holds he swore Benfica would not win another European final for a hundred years. Eight finals since, eight defeats: the European Cups of 1963, 1965 and 1968, the 1983 UEFA Cup, the 1988 and 1990 European Cup finals against PSV and Milan, and the Europa League finals of 2013 and 2014. Eusébio even prayed at Guttmann's grave before the 1990 final in Vienna. Milan won 1-0.
