How the Benfica quiz is checked
Every question above was written by hand and verified before it went live.
Every Benfica question here was checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

About the Benfica quiz
Benfica were founded in Lisbon in 1904 and have spent the 122 years since setting the standard in Portuguese football: a record 38 Primeira Liga titles as of 2026, two European Cups, and a production line of talent the rest of Europe shops from every summer. Home is the Estádio da Luz, rebuilt for Euro 2004 and still the loudest ground in Portugal on derby night. This quiz covers the lot — the Béla Guttmann and Eusébio years, the curse that supposedly followed them, the record title hauls, the €100m-plus sales, and the strange 2025-26 campaign in which Benfica went all 34 league games unbeaten and somehow still finished third. Whether you stand with the ultras in the Curva Sul or admire O Glorioso from a distance, there's a run of questions here with your name on it.
The defining stretch remains 1961 and 1962. On 31 May 1961, Guttmann's side beat Barcelona 3-2 at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, ending Real Madrid's five-year monopoly on the European Cup. A year later in Amsterdam they beat Madrid themselves, 5-3, a 20-year-old Eusébio striking twice to out-duel a Ferenc Puskás hat-trick in one of the greatest finals ever played. Then Guttmann, refused a pay rise, walked out — and legend holds he swore Benfica would not win another European final for a hundred years. Eight finals since, eight defeats: the European Cups of 1963, 1965 and 1968, the 1983 UEFA Cup, the 1988 and 1990 European Cup finals against PSV and Milan, and the Europa League finals of 2013 and 2014. Eusébio even prayed at Guttmann's grave before the 1990 final in Vienna. Milan won 1-0.
Expect plenty on the sales that fund the machine: João Félix's €126m move to Atlético Madrid in 2019 remains the club-record sale as of 2026, Chelsea triggered Enzo Fernández's €121m release clause in January 2023 barely six months after he arrived from River Plate, and Darwin Núñez joined Liverpool in 2022 for an initial €75m that could rise to €100m with add-ons. Manager questions run from Guttmann to José Mourinho — appointed in September 2025, gone to Real Madrid by June 2026 and replaced by Marco Silva — and the boardroom features too: Rui Costa won re-election as president in November 2025 with more than 93,000 members voting, a world record for a club election. Cult heroes from Mário Coluna to Luisão get their due. The difficulty climbs steadily: early questions ask which stadium Benfica call home and who their two great rivals are; later ones want scorers, dates and clause values from memory.
What separates Ball IQ from a list of pub-quiz questions is that every answer is explained. Get one wrong and you don't just see the correct option — you learn why: the context behind Guttmann's exit, how the 1962 final swung after Puskás's hat-trick, why Enzo's release clause made Benfica the selling club every sporting director studies. It turns a quiz into the fastest way to genuinely deepen your Benfica knowledge, whether you're a lifelong sócio or building your football education one club at a time. You can start right now: a set of sample Benfica questions is free to play in your browser, no download or sign-up needed. When you're ready for the full question bank — plus daily challenges to protect your streak and real-time multiplayer to settle arguments with Porto- and Sporting-supporting friends — the complete experience lives in the Ball IQ app for iPhone.
