About the Bayer Leverkusen quiz
Bayer 04 Leverkusen were founded in 1904 by employees of the Bayer chemical works, which is why everyone still calls them Die Werkself — the works eleven. They play in red and black at the BayArena, known as the Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion until the 1998 renaming, and for most of their history they were German football's great nearly men. Then came 2023-24. This free Bayer Leverkusen quiz covers both halves of that story: the seasons that earned the 'Neverkusen' nickname, and the one that finally buried it.
The near-misses are legendary. On the final day of 1999-2000 Leverkusen lost 2-0 at newly promoted SpVgg Unterhaching — Michael Ballack scoring an own goal — and handed Bayern Munich the title on goal difference. Two years later, Klaus Toppmöller's side finished second in the Bundesliga, second in the DFB-Pokal and second in Europe: at Hampden Park in May 2002, Raúl put Real Madrid ahead, Lúcio headed the equaliser, and Zinedine Zidane volleyed in Roberto Carlos's cross on the stroke of half-time to win it 2-1. Captain Jens Nowotny had torn his cruciate in the semi-final second leg against Manchester United — a tie Leverkusen won on away goals — and watched the final from the sidelines, with Hans-Jörg Butt in goal. The silverware that did arrive came in 1988, when Erich Ribbeck's team overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Espanyol and won the UEFA Cup shootout, and in the 1993 DFB-Pokal final against the Hertha BSC amateur side.
Then Xabi Alonso, appointed in October 2022 in place of Gerardo Seoane after coaching Real Sociedad B, built something unprecedented. Leverkusen went through the entire 2023-24 Bundesliga season unbeaten — 28 wins, six draws, 90 points — sealing the club's first German championship on 14 April with a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen in which Florian Wirtz scored a hat-trick, five games still to play. The double followed in Berlin, Granit Xhaka's early goal beating Kaiserslautern 1-0 in the DFB-Pokal final. The unbeaten run reached 51 matches across all competitions, a record for a European top-flight club, before Atalanta won the Europa League final 3-0 in Dublin through an Ademola Lookman hat-trick. Around all of it runs Leverkusen's real speciality — talent. Ulf Kirsten arrived from Dynamo Dresden in 1990 and became the club's all-time leading Bundesliga scorer; Ballack came from Kaiserslautern in 1999 and left for Bayern in 2002 alongside Zé Roberto; Dimitar Berbatov, Arturo Vidal, Bernd Schneider, a loaned Toni Kroos, Son Heung-min and Kai Havertz all passed through.
Every question comes with a short explained answer, so even a miss teaches you something — what the BayArena used to be called, or exactly how long that unbeaten run lasted.
