Hull City were founded in 1904 and everyone knows them as the Tigers. For over half a century home was Boothferry Park — from 1946 until 2002, when the club moved into a newly built stadium whose original name came from the local firm Kingston Communications. The foundations were laid after the war. Raich Carter, the former England inside-forward, became player-manager in 1948 and led City to the Third Division North title, and in 1949 a record crowd of 55,019 packed in for an FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester United — a competition in which City's best run before 2014 had ended in a 1930 semi-final replay against Arsenal. The 1960s gave the club Chris Chilton, still the all-time record goalscorer, while Andy Davidson's 500-plus league appearances remain unmatched. The modern rise is the stuff of legend: Warren Joyce masterminded the 1998-99 'Great Escape' from relegation out of the Football League, Peter Taylor delivered back-to-back promotions in 2004 and 2005, and in 2008 Dean Windass's first-half volley beat Bristol City 1-0 in the Championship play-off final to send Hull into the top flight for the first time in their history — with Ian Ashbee captaining the club through all four divisions along the way.
