What the Derby County quiz covers

Every question is written and checked by football fans — soccer, if you're reading this in the US — across the topics that decide a real Derby County expert:

This is one set from a bank of thousands of questions spanning 72 clubs, every major league and eight decades of football.

How the Derby County quiz is checked

Every question above was written by hand and verified before it went live.

Every Derby County question here was checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

About the Derby County quiz

Derby County are the Rams, founded in 1884 by Derbyshire County Cricket Club as a way of making money through the winter. The Baseball Ground was home for 102 years, named for the American sport briefly played on the site in Victorian times.

The great era belongs to Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, who took Derby to the First Division title in 1972 — confirmed while the players were abroad on holiday, results elsewhere handing them the championship. A European Cup semi-final followed. Clough left in 1973 and, in time, won the league and two European Cups with Nottingham Forest, which is why the East Midlands derby carries the edge it does.

Dave Mackay, once a Derby player, won a second title in 1975 with much of the same side. An FA Cup had come earlier, in 1946, in the first final after the war.

The modern history is harder: the 2007-08 Premier League season ended with 11 points and one win, a low nobody has matched, and administration followed in 2021 under Wayne Rooney. Steve Bloomer's 332 goals from the early 1900s still stand as the club record.

The Derby County set runs the full range — easy starters, a medium core, and hard questions a devoted fan has to think about.
