About Millwall
Millwall began on the Isle of Dogs in 1885 as Millwall Rovers, the works team of J.T. Morton, an Aberdeen firm whose first English cannery stood at Millwall dock and drew many of its workers down from Dundee. For their first years they were the Dockers. The name that stuck came out of the 1899-1900 FA Cup, when the Southern League side knocked out Aston Villa, the Football League leaders, and the headlines called them the Lions of the South; they went on to the semi-final and the old nickname was dropped. In 1910 the club left the Isle of Dogs altogether for The Den, on Cold Blow Lane in New Cross, a ground designed by Archibald Leitch, and stayed there for 83 years. It was from Cold Blow Lane that Millwall became, in 1937, the first Third Division side to reach an FA Cup semi-final. Sunderland beat them 2-1 at Leeds Road, Huddersfield, Dave Mangnall scoring Millwall's goal, and went on to lift the Cup.
The old Den made its cult heroes. Harry Cripps had played in West Ham's 1959 FA Youth Cup final team alongside Bobby Moore before crossing to Millwall in 1961, and Arry's Bar at the new ground is named after him. Barry Kitchener, a centre-back at the club from 1966 to 1982, set the appearance record and has the Barry Kitchener Stand. George Graham won promotion to the Second Division in 1984-85 and left for Arsenal in May 1986; John Docherty, a Glaswegian, replaced him and in his second season won the 1987-88 Second Division title, taking Millwall into the top flight for the first time. Tony Cascarino had cost £225,000 from Gillingham, where he had scored 110 goals, and he and Teddy Sheringham scored 99 between them in three seasons together. In 1988-89 Millwall went top on 1 October 1988 and never fell below tenth, still the club's highest league finish as of the end of the 2025-26 season. A 4-1 win over Coventry City put them top again for one night in September 1989, but they won only two more league games and went down in bottom place.
The break-up was quick. Cascarino went to Graham Taylor's Aston Villa in March 1990 as their record signing, and Terry Hurlock, Player of the Year in 1989, left that August for Rangers at £375,000 and won the Premier Division and the League Cup in his one season at Ibrox. Bruce Rioch, dismissed by Middlesbrough after two straight promotions, took over in 1990 and reached the 1990-91 play-offs, after which Sheringham was sold to Nottingham Forest for £2 million as the club's record scorer with 111 goals. Alex Rae, a £100,000 signing from Falkirk in 1990, scored 71 in six years before Sunderland paid £1m for him. The New Den was opened on 4 August 1993 by the Labour leader John Smith, the first new all-seater stadium completed in England after the Taylor Report, and Bobby Robson's Sporting CP won the opening friendly 2-1. Mick McCarthy's side finished third that first season and lost 5-1 on aggregate to Derby County in the play-off semi-final. In February 1996 McCarthy resigned to succeed Jack Charlton as Republic of Ireland manager, and a team that had led Division One that season went down in 22nd under Jimmy Nicholl.
Mark McGhee arrived in September 2000 and won the Second Division title eight months later with 93 points, Neil Harris scoring 27 league goals before a testicular cancer diagnosis in 2001 and the all-clear a year on. Dennis Wise replaced McGhee in October 2003 and, as player-manager, took Millwall to their first FA Cup final: Tim Cahill's 26th-minute goal beat Sunderland at Old Trafford, and on 22 May 2004 Manchester United won 3-0 at the Millennium Stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo heading the first and Ruud van Nistelrooy scoring twice. Curtis Weston came on aged 17 years and 119 days to break a record from the 1879 final. Wise scored in both legs of the club's first European tie, lost 4-2 on aggregate to Ferencváros. Harris passed Sheringham's record on 13 January 2009 at Crewe and finished with 138. Kenny Jackett lost the 2009 League One play-off final to Scunthorpe, then won the 2010 one through Paul Robinson against Swindon; Harris as manager lost to Barnsley in 2016, knocked champions Leicester City out of the FA Cup, and won the 2017 final through Steve Morison's 85th-minute goal. Every answer here explains itself.
