West Bromwich Albion were founded by factory men who called themselves the Strollers, and the Albion came in 1880. They played at Stoney Lane through their first two FA Cup wins and moved to The Hawthorns in 1900 — a 1-1 draw in that September, and they have never moved since. The throstle on the badge is a song thrush, which is where the older nickname comes from: the Throstles, long before the Baggies.
The trophies are older than most clubs' entire histories. The 1892 FA Cup came in a one-sided Midlands derby, four years after beating Preston North End. In 1930-31 Albion did something nobody has repeated — promotion from the Second Division and the FA Cup in the same season, W. G. Richardson scoring at Wembley. The league title arrived in 1919-20 with 104 goals and 60 points, both records at the time.
Then Ron Atkinson's side, and the three players everyone still names first. Cyrille Regis came from Hayes for an initial £5,000, Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson alongside him, and the press called them the Three Degrees after the American group. That team won 5-3 at Old Trafford in December 1978 — 3-3 at half-time, Len Cantello's volley voted goal of the season. Cunningham left for Real Madrid the next summer.
