About the Sheffield United quiz
Sheffield United were created in March 1889 by the Sheffield United Cricket Club, which wanted football to replace the gate money its ground was losing. Bramall Lane was a cricket ground first — it had staged an exhibition match under four thirty-foot wooden light towers back in 1878, eleven years before the football club existed — and the Blades have never played anywhere else. Red and white stripes with black shorts have been the colours almost from the start.
The trophies came early. Ernest 'Nudger' Needham captained the side to the First Division championship in 1897-98, still the club's only top-flight title, and four FA Cups followed: 1899 and 1902 either side of the turn of the century, then the 1915 final remembered as the Khaki Cup Final, played in front of uniformed soldiers with Lord Derby using the presentation to urge more men to enlist, and finally 1925, settled by Fred Tunstall's goal after half an hour.
What followed was long and hard. Relegation to the Fourth Division in 1981 turned on a missed penalty against Walsall on the last day; Ian Porterfield, who had scored Sunderland's winner in the 1973 FA Cup final, took charge that June. Tony Currie had gone to Leeds in 1976 for a fee that was a record for them, and Alan Woodward left for Tulsa Roughnecks in 1979 after more than 150 goals from the wing. Harry Johnson's 201 still stands clear of them all.
The modern Blades are the ones most supporters have lived through: Brian Deane scoring the first goal of the Premier League era in August 1992, Phil Jagielka going in goal for the last half-hour against Arsenal, two cup semi-finals and a play-off final in the same 2002-03 season, and Chris Wilder taking a boyhood club out of the third tier and finishing ninth in the Premier League.
