You already know where you were when Eden Hazard curled one in at Stamford Bridge with seven minutes left. Gary Cahill had pulled one back, Tottenham's title hopes went with the equaliser, and Leicester were champions of England. The season had been built on stranger stuff than that: a first clean sheet that did not arrive until October, a 1-0 against Crystal Palace, after which Claudio Ranieri took the squad to a pizzeria and made them make their own. Then Jamie Vardy scored against Manchester United in November for the eleventh league game running, one better than the ten-match run Ruud van Nistelrooy had set for United in 2003. Riyad Mahrez reached the London ceremony for the award voted by fellow professionals rather than by the writers, hours after scoring his 17th league goal of the title season.

Europe came next, and it went further than the fixture list suggested it would. Marc Albrighton scored the club's first ever Champions League goal inside five minutes at the Jan Breydel Stadium in September 2016, Mahrez added the other two, 3-0. By February the domestic picture had turned: a 2-1 defeat in Seville in the last-16 first leg on 22 February 2017, and the following evening Ranieri was dismissed with Leicester a point above the relegation zone — nine months after winning the Premier League. His assistant Craig Shakespeare stepped up, oversaw a 2-0 second leg to go through 3-2 on aggregate, and took the club into a quarter-final that Atlético Madrid settled 2-1 on aggregate.

The trophies each have their own texture. Steve Claridge's extra-time strike beat Middlesbrough 1-0 on 16 April 1997 for the club's first major trophy in 33 years; captain and centre-back Matt Elliott headed both goals, each from a Steve Guppy corner, against Tranmere in February 2000. Then Wembley in 2021: Youri Tielemans from distance into the top corner in the 63rd minute, 1-0, ending a wait that had included four previous losing finals, the last of them in 1969. At the other end Thiago Silva's cross-field ball picked out Ben Chilwell — a Leicester academy graduate wearing the other shirt that day — and VAR ruled him offside by the finest of margins, so the scramble that followed did not stand. A year on, José Mourinho's Roma edged the semi-final 2-1 on aggregate, Tammy Abraham's header settling the second leg in Rome, and went on to win that competition's inaugural final against Feyenoord. Somewhere in among all this, substitute Kelechi Iheanacho was tripped by Nathan Aké and converted an 89th-minute penalty to beat Manchester City — the club Leicester had signed him from in 2017.

The squad has never stopped turning over. Schmeichel arrived from Leeds United in June 2011, with Manchester City, Cardiff City and Notts County already behind him, and left for Ligue 1 side Nice in August 2022 on eleven years and more than 450 competitive appearances. Vardy had come the other way from Fleetwood Town in May 2012, fresh from their Conference Premier title and Stocksbridge Park Steels and FC Halifax Town before that. Maguire left in August 2019 for a reported £80m, overtaking the £75m Liverpool had paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018, two years after Leicester bought him from Hull City. Fofana arrived from Saint-Étienne aged 19 in October 2020 and was gone to Chelsea two years later for a reported £70m plus add-ons. Newcastle United paid a reported £38m for Barnes in July 2023, weeks after his 13 Premier League goals in a relegation season — the one where Leicester won their own final-day game and still went down, Everton's 1-0 over Bournemouth at Goodison Park leaving them on 36 points to Leicester's 34. They came straight back up with 97, a point clear of Ipswich Town, Leeds United third on 90 and Southampton going up through the play-offs, under Enzo Maresca — appointed on 16 June 2023, a year after returning to Manchester City as one of Pep Guardiola's assistants following a short spell in charge of Parma.
