How the Grêmio quiz is checked
Every question above was researched against sources and verified before it went live.
Every Grêmio question here was checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

About the Grêmio quiz
Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense were founded in Porto Alegre in September 1903, after Cândido Dias da Silva handed over his own ball so that an exhibition match in the city could be finished; he is remembered as the club's founder. City rivals Internacional followed six years later, in April 1909, and asked Grêmio to be their first opponents. That first Gre-Nal, on 18 July 1909, finished 10-0 to Grêmio, still the heaviest win the derby has ever produced. From 1904 the club played at the Estádio da Baixada in the Moinhos de Vento district, which staged that derby and served Grêmio for half a century until the Estádio Olímpico Monumental opened on 19 September 1954.
The early 1980s are where this quiz gets serious. Everaldo Marques da Silva, a left-back playing his club football at Grêmio, started all six of Brazil's matches at the 1970 World Cup before dying in a car crash in 1974. Grêmio's first Campeonato Brasileiro came in 1981, a two-legged final against São Paulo settled by two Paulo Isidoro goals at the Olímpico and a win at the Morumbi on 3 May for a 3-1 aggregate. Then came 1983: a 1-1 draw with Peñarol at the Centenário, a 2-1 win at the Olímpico through Caio and César, and Hugo De León lifting the Copa Libertadores with blood streaming down his face. Valdir Espinosa's 4-3-3 turned a young Renato Portaluppi loose down the right, and in Tokyo on 11 December Renato scored twice — in the 37th minute and at the start of extra time — to beat European champions Hamburger SV 2-1 and take the Intercontinental Cup.
The trophies kept coming. Grêmio came through the inaugural Copa do Brasil in 1989 unbeaten and beat Sport Recife 2-1 in the decisive leg on 2 September. Luiz Felipe Scolari's spell in Porto Alegre from 1993 to 1996 brought the 1994 Copa do Brasil, the 1995 Libertadores — 3-1 at home and 1-1 in Medellín against Atlético Nacional, with Mário Jardel's 12 goals making him the tournament's top scorer before he left for Porto — and the 1996 Brazilian title. Tite won the 2001 Copa do Brasil 5-3 on aggregate against Corinthians long before his own Corinthians and Brazil years. The club has also been a conveyor belt to Europe: Ronaldinho Gaúcho to Paris Saint-Germain in 2001, Anderson to Porto in January 2006 after his late winner in the Batalha dos Aflitos at Náutico, Lucas Leiva to Liverpool in 2007, Douglas Costa to Shakhtar Donetsk in 2010, Arthur to Barcelona for a reported €31m in 2018 and Everton 'Cebolinha' to Benfica in 2020.
There have been falls as well. Boca Juniors won both legs of the 2007 Libertadores final, 5-0 on aggregate with Riquelme man of the match twice; Flamengo's 5-0 at the Maracanã ended the 2019 semi-final; and relegation came in 2021, a third drop after 1991 and 2004, answered by promotion as Série B runners-up in 2022. In between, Grêmio beat Atlético Mineiro 4-2 on aggregate for a fifth Copa do Brasil in 2016, beat Lanús 3-1 over two legs for a third Libertadores in 2017 under Renato Portaluppi — the first Brazilian to win it as both player and coach — added the 2018 Recopa Sudamericana on penalties against Independiente, and finished the 2023 Brasileirão two points behind Palmeiras in Luis Suárez's only season. Play the quiz, see how much of it you knew, and read the explanation behind every answer.
The Grêmio set runs the full range — easy starters, a medium core, and hard questions a devoted fan has to think about.
