How the Internacional quiz is checked

Every question above was researched against sources and verified before it went live.

Every Internacional question here was checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

Internacional quiz — FAQ

When were Internacional founded?
On 4 April 1909, in Porto Alegre, by the three Poppe brothers. They had moved from São Paulo and found the city's existing clubs open only to those of German descent, so they founded one open to all nationalities. The first Gre-Nal followed on 18 July 1909 — Grêmio won it 10-0.
How many times have Internacional won the Copa Libertadores?
Twice. The first came in 2006, in an all-Brazilian final against defending champions São Paulo — 2-1 at the Morumbi and 2-2 at the Beira-Rio — under Abel Braga. The second came in 2010 against Guadalajara, won 2-1 in Mexico and 3-2 at home for 5-3 on aggregate, with Celso Roth in charge. The club also lost the 1980 final to Nacional of Uruguay.
Who scored when Internacional beat Barcelona in the Club World Cup final?
Adriano Gabiru. He came off the bench and turned in the only goal of the 2006 final in Yokohama, beating a Barcelona side under Frank Rijkaard that had won the Champions League months earlier with Ronaldinho and Deco.
What is the Gol Iluminado?
The only goal of the 1975 Brazilian championship final, scored by Chilean centre-back Elías Figueroa, who rose to head in Valdomiro's free kick to beat Cruzeiro 1-0 at the Beira-Rio. The image of him under a single beam of light gave the goal its name — the illuminated goal.
About the Internacional quiz

Sport Club Internacional were founded in Porto Alegre on 4 April 1909 by the three Poppe brothers, who had come from São Paulo and found the city's existing clubs open only to those of German descent — so they started one open to all nationalities. Just over three months later came the first Gre-Nal, on 18 July 1909 at the Estádio da Baixada, and Grêmio won it 10-0: still the heaviest scoreline the derby has ever produced. This quiz starts there and runs all the way to Yokohama.

Inter played at the Estádio dos Eucaliptos from 1931, a ground that hosted matches at the 1950 World Cup, before moving to the river. The Beira-Rio opened in April 1969 with a 2-1 win over Benfica — Eusébio scored for the visitors, Claudiomiro got the stadium's first-ever goal and Gilson Porto the winner. Its official name, Estádio José Pinheiro Borda, honours the Portuguese-born engineer who led the construction and died in April 1965, four years before the ground he built opened.

Then came the decade that made the club. Internacional won their first Brazilian championship in 1975, beating Cruzeiro 1-0 at the Beira-Rio on 14 December — the first national title for a club from Rio Grande do Sul — and the only goal, headed in by Chilean centre-back Elías Figueroa from Valdomiro's free kick, is remembered as the Gol Iluminado. Figueroa had arrived from Peñarol in 1972 and was voted South American Footballer of the Year in 1974, 1975 and 1976. Rubens Minelli's side retained the title in 1976, beating Corinthians 2-0 with goals from Dario and Valdomiro, and under Ênio Andrade the 1979 champions went unbeaten: 23 matches, 16 wins, seven draws, Vasco da Gama beaten over two legs in the final.

The modern half of the quiz covers the 2006 double — the Copa Libertadores won against defending champions São Paulo, then the Club World Cup final in Yokohama where Adriano Gabiru came off the bench to beat Frank Rijkaard's Barcelona 1-0, with Abel Braga in charge for both. There is the 2008 Copa Sudamericana against Estudiantes, Celso Roth's second Libertadores in 2010 against Chivas, and the players Porto Alegre sent out into the world: Falcão to Roma, Pato to Milan, Sandro to Tottenham, Oscar to Chelsea. Every question comes with a hint if you want one and the answer afterwards either way, so you can play it as a test or read it as a history. It is free, it works on any phone, and nothing needs installing.

The Internacional set runs the full range — easy starters, a medium core, and hard questions a devoted fan has to think about.
