About Tigres UANL

Tigres were founded on 7 March 1960 as Club Deportivo Universitario de Nuevo León, the football club of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, and took their current name in 1967 — the year the Estadio Universitario opened on the UANL campus in San Nicolás de los Garza. Supporters call the ground El Volcán, and in 1986 it hosted five World Cup matches. The first major trophy came in the 1975-76 Copa México, a 3-2 aggregate win over América that made Tigres the first club from Nuevo León to win an official national title. Then the league. Under the Uruguayan coach Carlos Miloc, with Tomás Boy and Gerónimo Barbadillo in the side, Tigres beat Cruz Azul in the 1977-78 semi-finals and UNAM in the final, 2-0 and 1-1. Miloc did it again in 1981-82: Guadalajara in the quarter-finals, América in the semis, and Atlante in a final that finished 2-2 on aggregate after a 1-0 defeat at the Estadio Azteca, Tigres taking the shoot-out 3-1.

Then came the strangest season the club has had. In 1995-96 Tigres beat Atlas 2-1 on aggregate to win their second Copa México, and on 24 March 1996, a few weeks later, they lost 2-1 to Monterrey in the game that sent them down to Primera División A. That game is still known as the Clásico del Descenso. One of the goalkeepers from that squad, Robert Dante Siboldi, stayed on and helped win promotion within a year. The long road back to a league title ran through Ricardo Ferretti, hired for a third time in 2010 with the club fighting relegation. His attack became the Cuatro Fantásticos: Damián Álvarez, Danilinho, the Chilean striker Héctor Mancilla and captain Lucas Lobos, an Argentine playmaker signed from Cádiz in December 2007 who won the league's Golden Ball in both Clausura 2011 and Apertura 2011. In the Apertura 2011 final Álvarez won the first leg 1-0 in Torreón, and on 11 December 2011 Mancilla, Danilinho and Alan Pulido scored in a 3-1 win over Santos Laguna at home, ending 29 years without a title.

The summer of 2015 changed the club. André-Pierre Gignac arrived on 18 June, out of contract at Marseille after 21 Ligue 1 goals in his final season, and Jürgen Damm came from Pachuca for a reported $10 million. Gignac's first Tigres goal opened a 3-1 win over Internacional in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores semi-final, sending Tigres to a final against River Plate. That December Tigres won the Apertura 2015 final after nearly throwing it away: 3-0 up from the first leg, they lost 4-1 to UNAM after extra time and won the shoot-out 4-2. A year on, Nahuel Guzmán saved all three of América's penalties as Tigres won the Apertura 2016 shoot-out 3-0 on Christmas Day. Eduardo Vargas came from Hoffenheim in January 2017 and Enner Valencia from West Ham that July, while Guido Pizarro spent 2017-18 at Sevilla and missed what came next: the first league final between Tigres and Monterrey. After a 1-1 draw at El Volcán, Dorlan Pabón scored early at the Estadio BBVA before Vargas equalised from outside the box and Francisco Meza headed the winner from a corner. Gignac's goal in a 1-0 home win over León, followed by a 0-0 draw away, then brought the Clausura 2019 title — Ferretti's fifth in the league with Tigres.

Gignac passed Walter Gaitán's 80 goals in 2018, and on 4 August 2019 his 105th, against Pumas, took him past Tomás Boy as the club's all-time top scorer in all competitions. The 2020 CONCACAF Champions League almost ended in the round of 16, until Guzmán went up for a free kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time against Alianza and headed Tigres through. In the one-off final in Orlando on 22 December 2020, Diego Rossi put LAFC ahead, Hugo Ayala equalised in the 72nd minute and Gignac won it six minutes from time — the club's first CONCACAF Champions League. At the Club World Cup in Qatar, Gignac scored twice against Ulsan Hyundai and a penalty to beat Copa Libertadores holders Palmeiras 1-0, making Tigres the first CONCACAF club to reach the final, which they lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich. He scored every Tigres goal of the tournament, finished top scorer and won the Silver Ball. The Ferretti era ended in May 2021, Florian Thauvin came and left for Udinese in January 2023, and that April Siboldi, the goalkeeper from 1996, took over with three games left. Sebastián Córdova scored both goals to knock out Monterrey in the semi-finals and five in six Liguilla games as Tigres won Clausura 2023. Every answer here explains itself.
