About Monterrey
Club de Fútbol Monterrey was founded on 28 June 1945 by a group of local businessmen, and its first season nearly finished it. In September 1945 the team bus caught fire at San Juan de los Lagos on the way to a match; several players were badly hurt, and the Costa Rican Enrique Lizano later died. Monterrey finished bottom and withdrew from the league in 1946. They came back in the Segunda División in 1952 and won promotion for good in 1960. The white shirt with navy blue vertical stripes that gave the club the name Rayados came later still: it was adopted in 1965, borrowed from Tampico Madero. Twenty-one years on, Tampico Madero were the opponents when the stripes finally won a league title. In the México 86 tournament Francisco Avilán's side knocked out Atlante and Guadalajara, then beat Tampico Madero 3-2 on aggregate in the final, with Francisco Javier Cruz — 'El Abuelo' — scoring the extra-time winner.
Home for most of that time was the Estadio Tecnológico, used from 1950 to 2015 apart from a 1973-80 spell at the Estadio Universitario. It was at the Universitario, by then Tigres' ground, that the city rivalry produced its cruellest afternoon. On 24 March 1996, in what became known as the Clásico del Descenso, Monterrey won 2-1 and sent Tigres down to the second division for the first time in their history. Three years later it was Monterrey on the edge. On 9 May 1999 they needed a draw at home to Puebla to stay up, and got it, 1-1, with Cruz setting up Sergio Pérez's goal on the day he retired. In June 1999 the club was handed to the Monterrey-based beverage and retail group FEMSA. Daniel Passarella's side ended a 17-year wait for a league title in Clausura 2003, beating Tigres 5-3 on aggregate in the semi-finals — the rivals' first ever Liguilla meeting — and Morelia 3-1 in the final.
Then came Víctor Manuel Vucetich, the coach Mexican press and fans call 'El Rey Midas' because everything he touches seems to turn to gold. His first title was Apertura 2009, won 6-4 on aggregate against Cruz Azul after Monterrey came from 3-1 down to win the first leg 4-3 at the Tecnológico. Humberto Suazo, signed from Colo-Colo in 2007 for a reported $5 million after three straight Chilean titles, was at the centre of it. He scored twice as a 3-0 second-leg win over Santos Laguna turned round a 3-2 defeat to take the Apertura 2010 final, and his goal in Utah beat Real Salt Lake 1-0 for the club's first CONCACAF Champions League in 2010-11. A year later Monterrey came from 2-0 down to beat Santos Laguna 4-2 in the second leg, Aldo de Nigris scoring twice, for a third straight continental title. The Club World Cup brought a shoot-out defeat to Kashiwa Reysol in 2011 and a 3-1 loss to Chelsea in Yokohama in 2012, followed by a 2-0 win over Al Ahly for third place.
In 2015 the club moved to Estadio BBVA, 'El Gigante de Acero', built by FEMSA for around US$200 million in Guadalupe, with the Cerro de la Silla in view. Its first final was lost: Dorlan Pabón levelled the Clausura 2016 decider before Víctor Guzmán's 93rd-minute header gave Pachuca the title. The first league final against Tigres, Apertura 2017, went the same way, Eduardo Vargas and Francisco Meza scoring in a 2-1 second-leg win for the visitors. The reply came in 2019. Nicolás Sánchez scored in both legs as Diego Alonso's team beat Tigres 2-1 on aggregate in the CONCACAF Champions League final; Alonso was gone by autumn, and Antonio Mohamed returned in October and won the Apertura 2019 title from eighth place, beating América on penalties after a 3-3 aggregate. In Qatar, Rogelio Funes Mori cancelled out Naby Keïta's opener before Roberto Firmino won the Club World Cup semi-final for Liverpool in the 91st minute, and the 2019-20 Copa MX, won against Tijuana in November 2020, completed a treble. Funes Mori went on to score 160 goals between 2015 and 2023, passing Suazo's 121. Every answer here explains itself.
