About the Chivas quiz
Chivas were founded in Guadalajara in 1906 by Edgar Everaert, who came from Belgium. The club started out as Club Unión and took the city's name in 1908. Its first great era was the Campeonísimo: seven league titles in nine seasons, from 1956–57 to 1964–65. Only two titles got away in that run, 1957–58 and 1962–63. The second went to Club Oro, Chivas's neighbours in Guadalajara, and it was the only Primera División title Oro ever won. In the same era Chivas won the first CONCACAF Champions' Cup, in 1962. The defender José 'Jamaicón' Villegas gave Mexico the 'síndrome del Jamaicón', its word for a footballer who gets homesick abroad. Tomás Balcázar played for Chivas and scored against France at the 1954 World Cup. He is also Chicharito's grandfather.
Chivas play Atlas in the Clásico Tapatío, Guadalajara's city derby. They lost the 1983–84 league final to América, a match known as the 'Final del Siglo', and that defeat added fuel to the Clásico Nacional. Under Ricardo Ferretti, Chivas won the Verano 1997 title by beating Toros Neza 6–1 in the second leg of the final. They lost the Clausura 2004 final to Pumas UNAM after a penalty shootout. Two years later José Manuel 'Chepo' de la Torre led them to the Apertura 2006 title. After a 1-1 first leg at the Estadio Jalisco, Adolfo 'Bofo' Bautista scored the winner at Toluca. Chivas took the final 3-2 on aggregate for their 11th league title.
In 2010, José Luis 'Güero' Real took Chivas to the Copa Libertadores final, where Internacional of Porto Alegre beat them in both legs. That July the club moved into a new home in Zapopan. The Estadio Omnilife, now the Estadio Akron, opened with a friendly against Manchester United. Under Matías Almeyda, Chivas beat Tigres UANL in the Clausura 2017 final. In 2018 they won the CONCACAF Champions League, beating Toronto FC on penalties at the Estadio Akron. At the 2018 Club World Cup in the UAE they lost their first match 3-2 to Kashima Antlers. Veljko Paunović reached the Clausura 2023 final in his first season, but Tigres won it 3-2 in extra time of the second leg.
Chivas players have gone on to careers abroad. Carlos Vela came through the youth system and signed for Arsenal in 2005. Carlos Salcido joined PSV Eindhoven after the 2006 World Cup. Omar Bravo left for Deportivo La Coruña in 2008, and Marco Fabián was sold to Eintracht Frankfurt in December 2015. Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández came back to his boyhood club in January 2024 after four years at LA Galaxy.
