For its first four decades the trophy was an Argentine and Uruguayan preserve. Independiente of Avellaneda turned dominance into an art form, winning seven titles including four in a row from 1972 to 1975, a run that has never been matched. Boca Juniors, Peñarol, Estudiantes and Nacional built the tournament's early mythology, and the fierce two-legged finals became notorious for their intensity.

The balance of power has shifted decisively toward Brazil in the modern era. Since 2019 every final has been won by a Brazilian club, and in 2025 Flamengo beat Palmeiras in Lima to claim a fourth crown. The table below lists every champion, runner-up and winning nation across the full history of the competition.

Copa Libertadores Winners: Every Champion by Year (1960–2025) — FAQ

Which club has won the most Copa Libertadores titles?
Independiente of Argentina hold the record with seven titles (1964, 1965, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1984), earning the nickname 'Rey de Copas' (King of Cups). Their four consecutive wins from 1972 to 1975 remain unmatched. Boca Juniors are second with six.
Who won the 2025 Copa Libertadores?
Flamengo won the 2025 Copa Libertadores, beating fellow Brazilian side Palmeiras 1–0 in the final in Lima, Peru, on 29 November 2025. A Danilo header settled the match and gave Flamengo their fourth continental title.
Which country has produced the most Copa Libertadores winners?
Argentina and Brazil are the two most successful nations. Argentine clubs led for decades, but Brazil has surged ahead in recent years — every final since 2019 has been won by a Brazilian club, including Flamengo, Palmeiras, Fluminense and Botafogo.
Has a club ever won the Copa Libertadores three years in a row?
No. Independiente's four straight titles from 1972 to 1975 is the longest winning streak. Several clubs have gone back-to-back, including Peñarol, Estudiantes, Boca Juniors and, most recently, Palmeiras in 2020 and 2021, but no side has taken three consecutive editions.
What is the Copa Libertadores?
It is South America's top club competition, played since 1960 — the continental championship whose winner represents CONMEBOL, comparable to the UEFA Champions League in Europe.
Is this every Copa Libertadores winner?
This page ranks clubs by titles. For the full year-by-year list, see our Copa Libertadores winners list.
