About Zamalek
Zamalek were founded in Cairo on 5 January 1911, four years after Al Ahly, and the Cairo newspapers of 1912 knew them as the Cairo International Sports Club, run largely by the city's French and Belgian communities. In 1921 the club beat the Sherwood Foresters 2-1 in the final of the Sultan Hussein Cup, the first title ever won by an Egyptian team, and fans carried the players through the streets; from then on they were the Conqueror of Foreigners. The derby had begun four years earlier, on 9 February 1917, with Al Ahly winning a friendly 1-0 at Zamalek Stadium; Zamalek won the return 1-0 three weeks later. The club went by several names along the way. The 1922 Egypt Cup records them as Mokhtalat, the Mixed Club, and in 1941 King Farouk I, a supporter himself, granted royal patronage and became honorary president of what was now Farouk El Awal Club. His team beat Al Ahly 6-0 twice in that decade, in the 1941-42 Cairo League and again in the 1944 Egypt Cup final with the King watching. After the 1952 revolution the royal name was dropped and, in August 1952, the club took the name of the Nile island district where it stood. The kit never changed through any of it: all white, with two parallel red lines across the chest.
Hassan Shehata, the forward fans called the Master, became one of the club's highest scorers, though the 1967 war halted Egyptian football in the middle of his career. He spent five years in Kuwait instead, joining Kazma in the second division, scoring 85 goals between 1968 and 1973 and helping them up before he came home to Zamalek in October 1973. The continental era began in 1984. Zamalek beat Nigeria's Shooting Stars 2-0 in Cairo and 1-0 in Lagos to win the African Cup of Champions Clubs, and the man who lifted it was Farouk Gaafar, the one-club midfielder known as the King of Midfield. Two years later they did it again the hard way, beating Africa Sports of Ivory Coast 2-0 in Cairo, losing 2-0 in Abidjan and winning the shoot-out 4-2. The third title in 1993 came after two goalless legs against Asante Kotoko, 0-0 in Kumasi and 0-0 in Cairo, and a 7-6 penalty win. In January 1994 Ayman Mansour scored the only goal against Al Ahly at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg to win the CAF Super Cup, the first continental meeting between two Egyptian clubs, though that year's Champions Clubs final went to Espérance de Tunis before the 1996 title put things right.
The players who carried that era were known by name and nickname. Hamada Emam was the Fox; Hazem Emam, the Emperor, left for Udinese in 1996, spent 1998 to 2000 on loan at De Graafschap, where he played 38 league games, and came back to Zamalek. In 2000 Hossam Hassan crossed the Cairo divide from Al Ahly, the same year a 17-year-old Ahmed Hossam, Mido, left for Gent, where he won the Belgian Ebony Shoe in 2001 and earned his move to Ajax. Hassan scored six goals in the 2002 CAF Champions League, which Zamalek won with a 0-0 draw in Casablanca and a 1-0 win over Raja Casablanca in Cairo for a fifth African title. In February 2003 goals from Mohamed Abdel Wahed, Hazem Emam and Abdel Halim Ali beat Wydad AC 3-1 in Cairo, making Zamalek the first club to win the CAF Super Cup three times. Hassan came back as manager in November 2009, replacing the sacked Henri Michel and taking the side from 14th to 2nd in his first twelve games. Mahmoud Abdelrazek, nicknamed Shikabala after the Zambian striker Webster Chikabala and called the Apache by Zamalek fans, had a winding path of his own: a free transfer to PAOK in January 2005 with no professional contract at Zamalek, a return to Egypt, a sale to Sporting CP in January 2014 that brought one first-team appearance, and a homecoming in 2015.
Jesualdo Ferreira arrived from Portugal in February 2015 and ended an 11-year wait: the 2014-15 league was Zamalek's first since 2003-04, and his side also beat Al Ahly 2-0 in the Egypt Cup final. The 2016 Champions League final went to Mamelodi Sundowns, 3-0 in Pretoria before Zamalek won 1-0 at Borg El Arab, 3-1 on aggregate. Three years later Christian Gross was on the bench when RS Berkane were beaten 5-3 on penalties at Borg El Arab after a 1-1 aggregate, the club's first CAF Confederation Cup. Patrice Carteron, who had coached Al Ahly in 2018, took over in December 2019 and won the CAF Super Cup in Doha that February, Youssef Obama scoring early and Achraf Bencharki adding two, the second in stoppage time, as Espérance were beaten 3-1. That November came the Final of the Century at Cairo International Stadium, the first Champions League final between two clubs from the same city, and Al Ahly won it 2-1. The answer came in 2024 under José Gomes: a 2-1 defeat in Berkane, Ahmed Hamdi's goal for a 1-0 win in Cairo and the Confederation Cup on away goals, then the Super of the Century that September at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, 1-1 with Al Ahly and 4-3 to Zamalek on penalties. Every answer here explains itself.
