How the Club América quiz is checked

Every question above was researched against sources and verified before it went live.

Every Club América question here was checked twice before publication — once against the claim the question makes, and once against the wrong answers offered beside it. A question whose wrong options can be dismissed without knowing any football is not really a question, so those get rewritten or dropped rather than padded out. Anything that could not be confirmed was removed rather than guessed, which is why some sets are smaller than others. Every one of them carries a written explanation. Spot something wrong and tell us — corrections from players are how the bank stays accurate.

About the Club América quiz

Club América was founded in Mexico City on 12 October 1916, and the club took its name from that date. It was Columbus Day, celebrated in Mexico as Día de la Raza. In 1959 the club was bought by Emilio Azcárraga Milmo. His family's broadcaster, Telesistema Mexicano, merged into Televisa in 1973, and América was run as part of that empire for decades. The quiz starts there and moves through the finals, the nights at the Azteca and the players who came and went.

The Estadio Azteca opened on 29 May 1966 with a 2-2 draw between América and Torino. América won back-to-back league titles by beating Clásico Nacional rivals Guadalajara in the 1983-84 final, then Pumas UNAM in 1984-85. That second final took two draws and a deciding third match. In the Verano 2002 final, Hugo Norberto Castillo's golden goal against Necaxa ended a 13-year wait for the title, with Manuel Lapuente in charge. In Clausura 2005 América beat Tecos 6-3 at the Azteca. In the Clausura 2013 final, goalkeeper Moisés Muñoz went up for a late corner and headed the goal that forced extra time, and América won on penalties. Beating Monterrey in the Apertura 2024 final made América the first club of Liga MX's short-tournament era to win three titles in a row.

Away from the league, América beat Toluca in the 2006 CONCACAF Champions' Cup final. They beat the Montreal Impact to win the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League, taking the second leg in Montreal. Plenty of big nights went the other way. Barcelona beat América 4-0 in the 2006 FIFA Club World Cup semi-final, and Real Madrid won their 2016 semi-final 2-0. Arsenal de Sarandí beat América on away goals in the 2007 Copa Sudamericana final. LDU Quito knocked them out of the 2008 Copa Libertadores semi-finals. León won the Apertura 2013 final 5-1 on aggregate. In May 2025, LAFC beat América 2-1 after extra time in a play-off for a place at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Then there are the people. Cuauhtémoc Blanco went on loan to Real Valladolid in 2000. Iván Zamorano arrived from Inter Milan in 2001, and Salvador Cabañas came from Jaguares de Chiapas in 2006. Zambia captain Kalusha Bwalya joined from PSV in 1994 and became a cult figure. Academy goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa left for AC Ajaccio in 2011, and Edson Álvarez joined Ajax in 2019. Oribe Peralta's move to Chivas that same summer was one of the most argued-about transfers of the era. Miguel Herrera won the league with América in both 2013 and 2018, and André Jardine arrived from Atlético San Luis in 2023. Pick your answers, then read why each one is right.

The Club América set runs the full range — easy starters, a medium core, and hard questions a devoted fan has to think about.
