About Pumas UNAM

Club Universidad was founded on 2 August 1954 to represent the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and played its first professional game away at Monterrey that September, in the Segunda División. The step up came with the 1961-62 second-tier title, and the first Primera División season, 1962-63, nearly ended straight back down: Renato Cesarini took over a side in last place, kept it up, and then built the integrated youth system that became known as the cantera. The name Pumas came from Roberto 'Tapatío' Méndez, the university's coach from 1946 to 1964, whose team talks compared his players to the big cat; the blue and gold were a tribute to Notre Dame. Home is the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Ciudad Universitaria, main stadium of the 1968 Olympics, where Bob Beamon made his long jump, with Diego Rivera's mural on its outer slopes left unfinished at his death. And every home game carries the 'Goya!' cry, traditionally traced to Preparatoria students in the 1940s shouting it as they skipped class for the nearby Cine Goya.

The rivalry with Club América took its edge early. Enrique Borja, a Pumas idol, was sold across the city for 1969-70 after saying publicly he did not want to go; he threatened to stop playing, was talked round, and became an América idol instead. Bora Milutinović arrived in 1972 as a midfielder, played 93 league games before 1976 and coached the club from 1977. Hugo Sánchez came through in the same years, finished a UNAM degree in dentistry while in the first team, and turned somersaults after his goals in honour of his sister Herlinda, a gymnast at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. His last game for the club was the 1980-81 final against reigning champions Cruz Azul: lost 1-0 away, won 4-1 at Ciudad Universitaria, 4-2 on aggregate, and then he left for Atlético Madrid. Earlier that year the Copa Interamericana against Nacional of Uruguay went to a third match after each side won 3-1 at home, and Pumas took the play-off 2-1 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in May 1981.

Miguel Mejía Barón, a product of the early cantera, coached the next great side from 1988 to 1991. Pumas went through the 1989 CONCACAF Champions' Cup unbeaten and won the final 3-1 at home against Pinar del Río of Cuba, 4-2 on aggregate. Jorge Campos broke into the first team in 1988 with Adolfo Ríos ahead of him in goal, so he asked to play up front and scored 14 league goals in his first full season; from 1990-91 he won five straight Golden Gloves as a goalkeeper, all of them at Pumas. Claudio Suárez, 'El Emperador', later capped 177 times by Mexico, was at the club from 1988 until he left for Guadalajara in 1996. Luis García scored 26 league goals in 1990-91 and both of Mexico's in a 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland at the 1994 World Cup. That season ended with the final every Pumas fan knows: América won the first leg 3-2, with García and David Patiño scoring the away goals, and Ricardo 'Tuca' Ferretti's free kick won the return 1-0 at Ciudad Universitaria. Pumas took the title on away goals, and it was Ferretti's last game as a player.

The wait for the next one lasted until 2004, when Hugo Sánchez came back as coach and won the Clausura and the Apertura, the first back-to-back champions of the short-tournament era, plus the Campeón de Campeones. Bruno Marioni, on loan from Tenerife, scored 16 in the Clausura, and the Apertura final against Monterrey began with a 2-1 win at home. Defender Joaquín Beltrán, a regular from 1996, won both before leaving for Necaxa in 2006. In 2005, their first Copa Sudamericana, Pumas beat Corinthians 3-0 in the quarter-final second leg and Vélez Sarsfield 4-0 in the semi, then lost the final to Boca Juniors on penalties. The sixth title came in the Clausura 2009 under Ferretti, when Pablo Barrera beat two sliding tackles to score in the 107th minute at Pachuca for 3-2 on aggregate. The seventh followed in Clausura 2011, with Guillermo Vázquez, promoted from assistant, beating Morelia 2-1 at home after a 1-1 first leg, academy product Javier Cortés scoring the winner. In Guard1anes 2020, Andrés Lillini went from emergency interim, named after Míchel resigned days before the season, to a final that was lost to León. Every answer here explains itself.

Pumas UNAM quiz — FAQ

Why are Pumas UNAM called the Pumas?
The nickname comes from Roberto 'Tapatío' Méndez, who coached at the university from 1946 to 1964 and whose motivational speeches compared his players to pumas. It stuck, and the university's teams are all known as Pumas. The blue and gold colours were chosen as a tribute to the University of Notre Dame, hence the other nickname, the Auriazules.
How many league titles have Pumas UNAM won?
Seven, as of the end of the 2025-26 season: 1976-77, 1980-81, 1990-91, Clausura 2004, Apertura 2004, Clausura 2009 and Clausura 2011. The 2004 pair under Hugo Sánchez made Pumas the first back-to-back champions of the short-tournament era. Internationally they have won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup three times, in 1980, 1982 and 1989, and the Copa Interamericana in 1981.
Where do Pumas UNAM play their home games?
At the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, on the Ciudad Universitaria campus in Mexico City. It was the main stadium of the 1968 Olympics, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics, including Bob Beamon's long jump. Its outer slopes carry Diego Rivera's mural 'La universidad, la familia y el deporte en México', left unfinished when he died.
Who are Pumas UNAM's biggest rivals?
Club América, in the Clásico Capitalino. The rivalry sharpened when América bought Pumas idol Enrique Borja for 1969-70 against his public wishes, and Pumas' most celebrated title came against them in the 1990-91 final, won on away goals after Ricardo 'Tuca' Ferretti's free kick decided the second leg 1-0. There is also a city rivalry with Cruz Azul, beaten by Pumas in the 1980-81 final.
