About Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen began on 4 February 1899, when a group of school students founded FV Werder. The club's first major trophy came in 1961, a 2-0 win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal final in Gelsenkirchen. In the Bundesliga's second season, 1964-65, Willi Multhaup's side became champions, a year after 1. FC Köln won the first title. Multhaup then left for Borussia Dortmund and won the 1966 Cup Winners' Cup there.
Werder finished 17th in 1979-80 and went down, then came straight back up in 1981, the year Otto Rehhagel arrived. He stayed for 14 years. Rudi Völler joined from 1860 Munich and was the Bundesliga's top scorer in 1982-83. In 1985-86 Michael Kutzop hit the post with a late penalty in a 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich, and Bayern took the title on goal difference. The European nights of that era became known as the Wunder von der Weser: 6-2 against Spartak Moscow after a 4-1 first-leg defeat, 5-0 against BFC Dynamo after losing 3-0 in East Berlin, and 5-3 against Anderlecht from 3-0 down. Werder won the 1991 DFB-Pokal on penalties against Köln, beat Monaco 2-0 in Lisbon in the 1992 Cup Winners' Cup final with goals from Klaus Allofs and Wynton Rufer, and beat Rot-Weiss Essen 3-1 in the 1994 cup final.
Thomas Schaaf replaced Felix Magath in May 1999 with the club in relegation danger. He kept Werder up and won the cup weeks later. His side won the double in 2003-04: they sealed the title 3-1 at Bayern's Olympiastadion on 8 May 2004 and beat second-division Alemannia Aachen 3-2 in the cup final. Ailton scored 28 league goals that season, with Johan Micoud, signed from Parma, running the midfield. Miroslav Klose was top scorer in 2005-06 with 25 goals. Mesut Özil arrived from Schalke 04 in January 2008 and scored the only goal of the 2009 cup final against Bayer Leverkusen. That spring Werder knocked out Hamburger SV in a UEFA Cup semi-final remembered for a paper ball, then lost the final 2-1 after extra time to Shakhtar Donetsk in Istanbul.
More recent questions follow Per Mertesacker's move to Arsenal in 2011 and Kevin De Bruyne's 2012-13 loan from Chelsea, when he scored 10 Bundesliga goals. In 2020 Werder survived the relegation play-off against 1. FC Heidenheim on away goals. They went down in 2021. Ole Werner arrived from Holstein Kiel that November and won promotion in his first season, and in 2022-23 Niclas Füllkrug's 16 goals earned him a share of the top scorer award with Christopher Nkunku. Every answer in this quiz has been fact-checked, so see how much of the club's history you really know.
