Europe's second-tier club competition began life as the UEFA Cup in 1971-72, replacing the old Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. For its first 26 seasons the final was played over two legs, home and away, with the trophy decided on aggregate score. From the 1997-98 edition onwards it switched to a single showpiece match at a neutral venue.
In 2009-10 the tournament was rebranded as the UEFA Europa League and folded in the former UEFA Cup and Intertoto strands, expanding to a group-stage format. The competition has become a Spanish stronghold in the modern era: Sevilla alone have lifted the trophy a record seven times, while Italian, German and English clubs have all enjoyed sustained runs of success.
