About VfB Stuttgart
VfB Stuttgart's story starts in 1912. That year FV Stuttgart 1893 merged with Kronen-Club Cannstatt to form the Verein für Bewegungsspiele Stuttgart. This quiz follows the club from that merger to the promotion it won as 2. Bundesliga runner-up under Pellegrino Matarazzo in 2019-20. Along the way it covers championship seasons, cup finals, European nights and relegations.
Stuttgart reached the German championship final in 1935 but lost 6-4 to Schalke 04 in Cologne. Their first national title came in 1950, with a 2-1 win over Kickers Offenbach at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Swiss coach Helmut Benthaus won the 1983-84 Bundesliga with the Förster brothers and Asgeir Sigurvinsson. In 1992 Guido Buchwald headed an 86th-minute winner at Leverkusen, and Stuttgart took the title on goal difference. Armin Veh's side then won the 2006-07 title, two points ahead of Schalke.
The cup and European rounds bring their own questions. In 1997 Joachim Löw won the DFB-Pokal in his first season in charge, beating Energie Cottbus 2-0 in Berlin. Maradona's Napoli beat Stuttgart in the 1989 UEFA Cup final, and Gianfranco Zola came off the bench to win the 1998 Cup Winners' Cup final for Chelsea in Stockholm. In October 2003 Felix Magath's young side beat Manchester United 2-1 at home in the Champions League.
Then come the players. Jürgen Klinsmann crossed the city from Stuttgarter Kickers in 1984. Krassimir Balakov and Giovane Élber formed the 'magic triangle'. Fredi Bobic was the Bundesliga's top scorer in 1995-96. From the 'Junge Wilde' era, Kevin Kuranyi joined Schalke, Aliaksandr Hleb went to Arsenal and Timo Hildebrand moved to Valencia. Sami Khedira later left for Real Madrid, Timo Werner for RB Leipzig, and Mario Gomez came back to Stuttgart in January 2018. Every question has a hint that explains the answer.
