  1. Paris Saint-Germain — PSG won the one-off Lisbon semi-final 3-0; Bayern beat Lyon in the other half of the draw and went on to win the trophy.
  2. VfB Stuttgart — Werner came from boyhood club VfB Stuttgart, who had just been relegated, and promptly scored 21 Bundesliga goals in his first season at Leipzig.
  3. Ralph Hasenhüttl — The Austrian arrived in 2016 having just kept newly promoted Ingolstadt in the Bundesliga, and immediately steered Leipzig into the Champions League.
  4. VfL Wolfsburg — Daniel Frahn scored a first-half hat-trick as Leipzig beat Wolfsburg in front of 31,212 at the Red Bull Arena — the young club's first genuine headline.
  5. The fifth tier — They started in the fifth-tier NOFV-Oberliga Süd and won it at the first attempt, the first of four promotions in seven years.

  8. Yussuf Poulsen — Poulsen joined from Lyngby in 2013 when Leipzig were a 3. Liga side and rose with them all the way; Forsberg, Gulácsi and Orban all arrived in 2015, by which time the club were in the 2. Bundesliga.

  1. Alexander Zorniger — Zorniger's high-pressing side went up in 2013 and again in 2014; he left in early 2015 and took over at another Bundesliga club that summer.
  2. German football's rules did not allow a company name in a club's name — The invented word 'RasenBallsport' (roughly 'lawn ball sports') exists purely so the initials could stay 'RB' — the club had to engineer a workaround for a restriction on what an official club name is permitted to contain.
  3. The DFB-Pokal — The 2022 DFB-Pokal was the club's first silverware of any real weight, and they retained it the following season.
  4. Liverpool — Liverpool triggered the Hungarian's release clause, following the same Salzburg-to-Leipzig-to-Anfield path Naby Keïta had taken years earlier.
  5. Joško Gvardiol — Gvardiol arrived from Dinamo Zagreb, starred at the 2022 World Cup for Croatia and moved to City the following summer.
  6. 2016-17 — Promotion from the 2. Bundesliga in May 2016 put them in the top flight for 2016-17, where they finished second at the first attempt.
  7. Ralf Rangnick — Rangnick had run the sporting side since 2012 and stepped into the dugout himself for the promotion season, then handed the team over and went back upstairs.
