About Vasco da Gama

Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama were founded on 21 August 1898 as a rowing club, started by clerks from Rio de Janeiro's Saúde district and named after the Portuguese navigator, four hundred years after his sea route to India. Football came in 1915, when Vasco took over the Lusitânia Sport Club team, and the club entered competition the following year in Rio's third division. In 1923, in their debut top-flight season, the Camisas Negras — the Black Shirts, a largely Black and working-class side — beat the city's elite clubs to the Campeonato Carioca, and they are now honoured in Brazil's Book of Heroes of the Fatherland. The elite clubs answered by forming a new league, the AMEA, which would only admit Vasco if it dismissed twelve players, all of them Black. In 1924 president José Augusto Prestes refused in a letter remembered as the Resposta Histórica, and Vasco won the rival LMDT title undefeated instead. When rivals questioned their lack of a ground, members and fans paid for one: São Januário opened on 21 April 1927 after ten months of building, the largest stadium in the Americas until Montevideo's Estadio Centenario arrived for the 1930 World Cup, and Brazil's biggest until Pacaembu in 1940.

The 1940s belonged to the Expresso da Vitória, the Victory Express, led by the Uruguayan coach Ondino Viera and one of the first Brazilian sides to play a 4-2-4. Its forward Ademir de Menezes scored 301 goals for Vasco, a total only Romário and Roberto Dinamite have beaten. In 1948 the club went to Santiago for the South American Championship of Champions, organised by Colo-Colo, topped the seven-team round robin unbeaten and clinched it with a last-round 0-0 draw against River Plate that left them a point clear. CONMEBOL recognised that title in 1996, and Vasco were admitted to the 1997 Supercopa Libertadores, a competition open only to past Libertadores winners, a year before they won one. In 1957 they beat Real Madrid, the reigning European champions, 4-3 in the final of the Tournoi de Paris before more than 65,000, a game FIFA later called the most notable meeting of teams from two continents before 1960. Roberto Dinamite scored 190 Série A goals, plus 284 in the Carioca, served as club president from 2008 to 2014 between two spells for Eurico Miranda, and since December 2024 has given his name to the Brasileirão's top-scorer trophy. Romário was sold to PSV Eindhoven at the end of 1988 for a record fee for a Brazilian player, and in 1989 the 'SeleVasco', headlined by Bebeto's move from Flamengo, won the national title with a 1-0 win over São Paulo through Sorato.

Then came the Esquadrão Imortal. In 1997 Edmundo, 'O Animal', scored 29 league goals in 28 games, six of them in one match against União São João, breaking the season record Reinaldo had held since 1977, and Vasco took the title after two goalless final legs against Palmeiras, at the Morumbi and the Maracanã, on their better overall record. Edmundo left for Fiorentina and came back in 1999 for 23 billion lire. The centenary year of 1998 brought the Copa Libertadores: Juninho Pernambucano's 82nd-minute free kick earned a 1-1 draw away to River Plate in the semi-final, and Donizete and Luizão scored in both legs of the final as Ecuador's Barcelona SC were beaten 2-0 at São Januário and 2-1 in Guayaquil under Antônio Lopes. In Tokyo that December Juninho equalised against Real Madrid before Raúl's 83rd-minute winner. The year 2000 had everything: Romário scored twice in a 3-1 win over Manchester United at the FIFA Club World Championship before Corinthians won the Maracanã final 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw; Romário's hat-trick, the winner deep in stoppage time, turned a 3-0 half-time deficit against Palmeiras into a 4-3 Copa Mercosur win remembered as A Virada do Século; and the Copa João Havelange, the 116-team stand-in for that year's Série A, was won 3-1 against São Caetano at the Maracanã after a fence collapse at São Januário stopped the original second leg.

Juninho won a court injunction in 2001, joined Lyon as a free agent and won seven straight league titles in France before returning to Vasco in 2011 and 2013. Romário finished as the Brasileirão's top scorer in 2005 with 22 goals at the age of 39, and on 20 May 2007 he scored his 1,000th goal, a penalty against Sport Recife at São Januário that stopped the match for more than 20 minutes; the club later put up a statue of him there. The lows are in here too: a 2-0 home defeat to Vitória on the final day of 2008 brought the first relegation in the club's history, the same year a 16-year-old Philippe Coutinho was sold to Inter Milan for €4 million and loaned straight back to help win Série B in 2009, and a 5-1 defeat to Atlético Paranaense on the last matchday of 2013 brought the second. In between, Ricardo Gomes's side beat Coritiba on away goals in the 2011 Copa do Brasil final, 1-0 at São Januário and 3-2 down at the Couto Pereira, then finished that Brasileirão as runners-up to Corinthians. There is the 2022 sale of 70% of the football company to Miami-based 777 Partners, suspended by a court in 2024; the 2025 Copa do Brasil final lost 2-1 on aggregate to Corinthians after Fluminense were knocked out in the semi-finals; and the Clássico dos Milhões against Flamengo, the derby named for the size of both clubs' support. Every answer here explains itself.
