About Fluminense

Fluminense were founded on 21 July 1902 in the Laranjeiras district of Rio de Janeiro, the first football club founded in the city, by a group led by Oscar Cox. Cox had been born in Brazil with English citizenship and picked the game up while studying in Lausanne, Switzerland, and he became the club's first president. Within a decade Fluminense had made their own rival. In October 1911 a group of unhappy players walked out and took their football to Flamengo, a rowing club with no football department, and on 7 July 1912 the two met for the first time at Laranjeiras: Fluminense 3-2, in front of about 800 people. The journalist Mário Filho later gave the fixture its name, Fla-Flu, while Rio football was turning professional, and the Maracanã where the derby is now played is officially the Estádio Mário Filho in his honour.

The nickname came from an insult. On 13 May 1914 Carlos Alberto played against America, the club he had just left, and their fans jeered him with shouts of 'pó de arroz' over the rice powder on his face. Fluminense supporters took the taunt as their own, and throwing powder became their matchday tradition. That same year Laranjeiras staged Brazil's first-ever match, against the touring English side Exeter City during the club's 12th anniversary celebrations, which is why Fluminense call their ground the birthplace of the Seleção. In 1949 the International Olympic Committee gave Fluminense the Olympic Cup for their pioneering role in sport, the first football club to receive it. Three years later Zezé Moreira, with Didi, Telê and Orlando Pingo de Ouro in his side, won the 1952 Copa Rio unbeaten: Austria Wien beaten in the semi-final, then Corinthians 2-0 and 2-2 at the Maracanã. Moreira went on to take charge of 467 Fluminense games; as of June 2025 goalkeeper Castilho held the appearance record with 699 between 1947 and 1964, and Waldo the scoring record with 319 goals between 1954 and 1961.

Then the Fla-Flu that still gets replayed. On 25 June 1995, in Flamengo's centenary year and with Romário, the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, in their side, Renato Gaúcho turned an Aílton shot in off his belly late on to make it 3-2 at the Maracanã, and Fluminense took the Campeonato Carioca by a single point. The fall came quickly after. Carlos Alberto Parreira, who had won the 1984 Brazilian title at the club and the 1994 World Cup with Brazil, came back to lead the 1999 Série C campaign, and winning it put Fluminense straight into the Blue Group of the one-off 2000 Copa João Havelange. Renato returned as coach in April 2007 and won his first trophy as a manager within weeks: 1-1 against Figueirense at the Maracanã, then 1-0 in Florianópolis, Roger scoring in the third minute of the second leg. A year later Boca Juniors, the holders, were beaten 3-1 in the Libertadores semi-final, and Thiago Neves scored a hat-trick in the second leg of the final against LDU Quito to make it 5-5 on aggregate, before the Ecuadorians won the shootout 3-1.

Health insurer Unimed was the main sponsor from 1999 to 2014 and paid for Fred, Deco, Conca and Washington. Cuca kept the club up in 2009 when relegation odds stood at 98%, Muricy Ramalho won the 2010 Brasileirão, the first national title in 26 years, with Darío Conca playing all 38 league games, and Abel Braga added the 2012 title, clinched with three games to spare when Fred scored twice in a 3-2 win over Palmeiras on 11 November. Laranjeiras sent players to Europe too: Marcelo to Real Madrid in January 2007, and Thiago Silva, signed from Dynamo Moscow in 2006 after six months in hospital with tuberculosis, to AC Milan as 'O Monstro'. Under Fernando Diniz, Germán Cano scored 26 league goals in 2022, and the 2023 Libertadores brought a 5-1 win over River Plate, Cano's 87th-minute winner in Porto Alegre against Internacional and, on 4 November at the Maracanã, John Kennedy's 99th-minute goal to beat Boca Juniors 2-1 for the club's first Libertadores, with Marcelo at left-back. Every answer here explains itself.
