About OGC Nice
OGC Nice were founded in July 1904 in the Les Baumettes district of the city as the Gymnaste Club, and took the name Olympique Gymnaste Club de Nice in December 1924. Just Fontaine won the 1956 French title with Nice before leaving that summer for Reims. Nice reached the European Cup quarter-finals in 1956–57 and again in 1959–60, and Real Madrid knocked them out both times. In 1960 Nice won the first leg 3–2 at home, then lost 4–0 in Madrid. In 1975–76 they finished second in Division 1 on 54 points, three behind champions Saint-Étienne.
The 1996–97 season had the best and the worst in it. On 10 May 1997 Silvester Takač's Nice drew 1–1 with Guingamp after extra time at the Parc des Princes and won the Coupe de France 5–4 on penalties. In the league they finished bottom with 23 points and went down, while Côte d'Azur rivals Monaco won the title. Nice came back up by finishing third in Division 2 in 2001–02, behind AC Ajaccio and Strasbourg. Under Frédéric Antonetti they reached the 2006 Coupe de la Ligue final at the Stade de France, where Nancy beat them 2–1. Marama Vahirua scored for Nice.
After 86 years at the Stade du Ray, Nice opened the Allianz Riviera on 22 September 2013 with a Ligue 1 match against Valenciennes. The stadium hosted one of Euro 2016's biggest shocks when Iceland beat England 2–1 there in the round of 16 on 27 June 2016. Lucien Favre's Nice finished third in 2016–17 behind Monaco and PSG. In August 2017 they knocked Ajax out of the Champions League third qualifying round on away goals before losing the play-off to Napoli. Christophe Galtier arrived in 2021 straight after winning Ligue 1 with Lille, and his side lost the 2022 Coupe de France final 1–0 to Nantes. Nice reached the quarter-finals of the 2022–23 Europa Conference League, where Basel knocked them out.
Nice has been a stepping stone for many players. Hugo Lloris joined Lyon in 2008. David Ospina kept goal from 2008 to 2014 and then signed for Arsenal. Loïc Rémy left for Marseille in 2010, and Hatem Ben Arfa joined Paris Saint-Germain after a 17-goal Ligue 1 season in 2015–16.
