About Lille
Lille OSC was formed in 1944, when Olympique Lillois merged with SC Fives, a club from the Fives district of the city. Success came quickly. In 1945-46, their second season after the merger, Lille won the league and cup double and beat Red Star in the Coupe de France final. They then won three Coupe de France finals in a row from 1946 to 1948, beating Strasbourg in 1947 and RC Lens in the 1948 northern derby final. A second league title followed in 1953-54.
Lille were relegated from Division 1 in 1997. In 1998 they appointed Vahid Halilhodžić, who had led Raja Casablanca to the 1997 CAF Champions League. He won the 1999-2000 Division 2 title by 16 points from Guingamp. Back in the top flight, Lille finished third in 2000-01, nine points behind champions Nantes. In their first Champions League campaign they knocked out Parma 2-1 on aggregate, then finished third in a group with Deportivo La Coruña, Manchester United and Olympiacos. In the UEFA Cup they knocked out Fiorentina before Borussia Dortmund eliminated them on away goals. Halilhodžić left for Rennes in 2002.
Under Claude Puel, Lille won the 2004 Intertoto Cup, beating União de Leiria 2-0 after extra time in the second leg. On 2 November 2005, Milenko Aćimović scored the only goal against Manchester United in front of more than 66,000 at the Stade de France. Rudi Garcia arrived from Le Mans in June 2008, and in 2010-11 Lille won the double. Ludovic Obraniak's late winner beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe de France final, and Moussa Sow finished as Ligue 1's top scorer with 25 league goals.
Lille have also sold a long line of players to bigger clubs. Pascal Cygan went to Arsenal in 2002. Kader Keïta, Jean II Makoun and Michel Bastos all went to Lyon between 2007 and 2009. Eden Hazard, who joined the academy from Tubize at 14, went to Chelsea in 2012. Nicolas Pépé went to Arsenal for about £72m in 2019, and Rafael Leão and Victor Osimhen went to Italy. Christophe Galtier's team still won the 2020-21 title. Jonathan David, signed from Gent, and Burak Yilmaz, who arrived from Besiktas at 35, scored in the final-day 2-1 win at Angers that finished one point ahead of PSG.
