That changed with the Qatari takeover of Paris Saint-Germain. Since 2013 PSG have turned the Ligue 1 title into an almost annual formality, assembling the most dominant era any French club has known and pushing their tally past Saint-Étienne and Marseille to lead the all-time count. Only Montpellier, Monaco and Lille have interrupted the run.

This table lists every champion and runner-up from the inaugural 1932-33 season through 2024-25. Note the 1992-93 line: Marseille finished top on the pitch but were stripped of the title amid a match-fixing scandal, and no champion was officially awarded that year.

French football's top flight has crowned champions since 1932, and its history splits neatly into two eras: a long spell where the title moved freely between the country's great clubs, and the recent age of Paris Saint-Germain dominance. This page ranks every Ligue 1 champion by number of titles.

PSG now lead the all-time list with 14, having pulled clear during the Qatari-ownership era. Saint-Étienne's 10 titles, most from a golden 1960s and 70s, keep them second, just ahead of Marseille. Note that Marseille were stripped of the 1992-93 title amid a match-fixing scandal, so it does not count toward their total.

Why is there no champion for the 1992-93 season?
Marseille finished top of the table on the pitch but were stripped of the title after a match-fixing scandal involving a bribed opponent late in the campaign. French authorities declined to award the championship to anyone else, so 1992-93 has no official winner. Runner-up PSG were not promoted to champions.
Who won Ligue 1 in 2024-25?
Paris Saint-Germain won the 2024-25 title, sealing it with six games to spare in April 2025. Marseille finished second, well behind PSG's total, as Luis Enrique's side cruised to another dominant French championship.
