The early decades belonged to prolific imports and homegrown talents alike — Roger Courtois, Just Fontaine and the astonishing Josip Skoblar, whose 44 goals for Marseille in 1970–71 remain the single-season Ligue 1 record that no one has come close to touching since.

A handful of names recur like a drumbeat. Carlos Bianchi topped the charts five times in the 1970s across Reims and Paris Saint-Germain, Delio Onnis piled up goals for Monaco, Tours and Toulon, and Jean-Pierre Papin strung together five straight Golden Boots for Marseille from 1988 to 1992 — a run only Kylian Mbappé has since rivalled. Ties were common in the amateur and early professional eras, when two or even three players finished level and shared the honour.

The modern era is defined by Mbappé, who led the division in six of seven seasons before leaving for Real Madrid, twice edging Wissam Ben Yedder and once posting 33 goals. His departure blew the race open: in 2024–25 Ousmane Dembélé and Mason Greenwood both finished on 21, with Dembélé taking the Golden Boot on the penalties tiebreak.
