About Hibernian
Hibernian take their name from Hibernia, the Latin name for Ireland. Irish immigrants founded the club in Edinburgh's Cowgate in 1875. This quiz runs from those beginnings to the modern day. It covers cup finals, European nights, Edinburgh derbies and the managers and players who came through Easter Road.
Hibs won their first Scottish Cup in 1887, beating Dumbarton 2–1 at Hampden. They won it again in 1902 with a 1–0 win over Celtic, and then waited 114 years for the next one. That wait ended on 21 May 2016, when Hibs beat Rangers 3–2 at Hampden. Anthony Stokes scored twice and captain David Gray headed the winner from a corner in stoppage time. The questions also cover the League Cup wins over Dunfermline in 1991 and Kilmarnock in 2007, and the finals Hibs lost to Livingston, Hearts, Ross County and St Johnstone.
In 1955–56, Hibs became the first British club to play in the European Cup, and they reached the semi-finals before Stade de Reims knocked them out. In the 1967–68 Fairs Cup they lost 4–1 in Naples, then beat Napoli 5–0 at Easter Road. Closer to home, Hibs won 7–0 at Tynecastle on New Year's Day 1973. In 1990, the 'Hands off Hibs' campaign fought off a takeover bid led by Hearts chairman Wallace Mercer.
You'll also need to know where the people went. Famous Five winger Gordon Smith won league titles with Hibs, Hearts and Dundee. Joe Baker left for Torino. Eddie Turnbull came back from Aberdeen as manager. Alex McLeish left for Rangers, Tony Mowbray for West Brom and Alan Stubbs for Rotherham. Several Hibs players were sold on: Garry O'Connor to Lokomotiv Moscow, Kevin Thomson and Steven Whittaker to Rangers, Steven Fletcher to Burnley and John McGinn to Aston Villa. Answer each question, read the hint after it, and see how your Hibs knowledge holds up.
