About Hearts
Heart of Midlothian take their name from a nickname for Edinburgh's Old Tolbooth. Sir Walter Scott also used it as the title of his 1818 novel, The Heart of Midlothian. Hearts have played at Tynecastle, in the Gorgie district of west Edinburgh, since 1886. In 1914 Hearts players enlisted together in McCrae's Battalion, the 16th Battalion of the Royal Scots raised by Sir George McCrae. Under Tommy Walker, who managed the club from 1951 to 1966, Hearts won the Scottish league titles of 1957-58 and 1959-60.
Few Hearts seasons hurt more than 1985-86. On the final day Hearts lost 2-0 at Dens Park, where Albert Kidd came off the Dundee bench and scored twice late on. Celtic beat St Mirren 5-0 the same afternoon and took the title on goal difference. A week later Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen beat Hearts 3-0 in the Scottish Cup final. Europe brought better nights. In the 1988-89 UEFA Cup quarter-finals Hearts beat Bayern Munich 1-0 at Tynecastle, then lost 2-0 in Munich. In 1990 chairman Wallace Mercer tried to take over Hibernian and merge the two clubs, but the 'Hands off Hibs' campaign stopped the bid.
Jim Jefferies left Falkirk to become manager in 1995, and in 1998 Hearts won the Scottish Cup 2-1 at Celtic Park. Colin Cameron scored an early penalty and Stéphane Adam added a second before Ally McCoist pulled one back. The Vladimir Romanov era was eventful. George Burley left in October 2005 with Hearts unbeaten at the top of the SPL. Graham Rix replaced him and was sacked in March 2006, and Valdas Ivanauskas then led the team to the 2006 Scottish Cup, won on penalties against Second Division Gretna after a 1-1 draw at Hampden. Romanov also controlled FBK Kaunas, and a steady stream of players moved between Kaunas and Tynecastle. Hearts played European home games at Murrayfield, and AEK Athens ended their 2006-07 Champions League run in the third qualifying round.
The 2012 Scottish Cup final is the one Hearts fans love most: a 5-1 win over Edinburgh rivals Hibernian at Hampden, with Rudi Skácel scoring twice in Paulo Sérgio's first season. The lows came soon after. Hearts lost the 2013 League Cup final 3-2 to St Mirren. In 2013-14 Gary Locke managed a very young squad through administration and a 15-point deduction, and the season ended in relegation. Robbie Neilson won the Championship at the first attempt in 2014-15. More recently Hearts lost Scottish Cup finals to Celtic in 2019 and 2020 and to Rangers in 2022, and played in the Conference League group stage after FC Zürich knocked them out of the 2022-23 Europa League play-off round. Our questions cover all of it, from Scott to Stendel. How many can you get right?
