About Genoa

Genoa's story starts with James Richardson Spensley. He was an English doctor working in the city, and in 1897 he started the club's football section. A year later he led the side to the first Italian Football Championship: the May 1898 final in Turin went to extra time, and Genoa beat Internazionale Torino. Genoa won three titles in a row before Milan stopped them in the 1901 final, winning 3-0 at Ponte Carrega for their own first championship. William Garbutt arrived as coach in 1912. His players called him 'Mister', and Italian football still uses the word for a head coach. Defender Renzo De Vecchi joined from Milan in 1913 and won the 1914-15, 1922-23 and 1923-24 titles. The back-to-back titles of 1922-23 and 1923-24 took Genoa to nine, and the 1923-24 title is still their most recent.

The club's home is named after Luigi Ferraris. He played for Genoa and trained as an engineer, and he was killed in action in 1915. The ground took his name in 1933. In 1925 Genoa lost the drawn-out northern final series, remembered as the 'Scudetto of the Pistols', to Bologna after a series of replays. Playing as Genova 1893, they won the 1937 Coppa Italia final in Florence, where Luigi Torti scored the only goal against Roma. During Italia 90 the Luigi Ferraris staged the round-of-16 shootout in which the Republic of Ireland beat Romania, with Packie Bonner saving a penalty and David O'Leary scoring the winner. The quiz also covers players who made their names at Genoa: winger Gigi Meroni, who joined Torino in 1964, and Roberto Pruzzo, Serie B top scorer for Genoa in 1975-76, who went on to win three capocannoniere titles with Roma.

The modern era has had big highs and lows. Franco Scoglio's Genoa won Serie B in 1988-89, finishing level with Bari on 51 points. In June 1995 they went down from Serie A after a 1-1 play-off against Padova in Florence, which Padova won on penalties. Nine months later, in March 1996, Genoa beat Port Vale 5-2 at Wembley in the last Anglo-Italian Cup final. In 2005 the FIGC found that Genoa had fixed their final-day 3-2 Serie B win over Venezia and demoted them to Serie C1. Diego Milito left for Real Zaragoza. Gian Piero Gasperini came from Crotone in 2006 and had Genoa back in Serie A in 2007. By 2008-09 Milito was back and scored 24 league goals, one fewer than Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Genoa finished fifth on 68 points, level with Fiorentina, who took fourth place on head-to-head. That summer Milito and Thiago Motta both joined Jose Mourinho's Inter.

Genoa have also sold a long line of players to bigger clubs. In 2018 they signed Krzysztof Piatek from Cracovia and Cristian Romero from Belgrano. That same summer academy goalkeeper Mattia Perin left for Juventus. Milan paid about 35 million euros for Piatek in January 2019. Radu Dragusin left for Tottenham Hotspur in January 2024, and Mateo Retegui, who left that summer, won the 2024-25 capocannoniere with Atalanta. Off the pitch, Miami-based 777 Partners bought the club from Enrico Preziosi in September 2021. Ballon d'Or winner Andriy Shevchenko then lasted around two months as coach, and Alexander Blessin came in from KV Oostende in January 2022. Genoa were still relegated, but Alberto Gilardino's side went straight back up in 2022-23 as runners-up to Frosinone. Work through the questions below to see how much of it you know.
