Answers — round 1
  1. 1902 — Fluminense was founded on 21 July 1902 by a group led by Oscar Cox. It was the first football club founded in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
  2. Switzerland — Oscar Cox, born in Brazil with English citizenship, picked up the game while studying in Lausanne, Switzerland. He then led the group that founded Fluminense in 1902.
  3. Flamengo — The 1911 walkout created Flamengo's football department, and that is where the Fla-Flu rivalry started. Fluminense still won the first meeting in 1912.
  4. 3-2 — Fluminense won the first Fla-Flu 3-2 at Laranjeiras in front of about 800 people.
  5. Mário Filho — Mário Filho came up with the name 'Fla-Flu' while Rio football was turning professional. The Maracanã's official name, Estádio Mário Filho, honours him.
  6. America — On 13 May 1914 Carlos Alberto faced America, the club he had just left, and their fans taunted him with shouts of 'pó de arroz' over the powder on his face. Fluminense supporters adopted the insult, and throwing powder became their matchday tradition.
  7. Exeter City — Brazil made their debut against Exeter City at Laranjeiras in 1914, during Fluminense's 12th anniversary celebrations. That is why the club calls itself the birthplace of the Seleção.
  8. The Olympic Cup — The IOC gave Fluminense the Olympic Cup in 1949 for its pioneering role in sport. It was the first football club to receive it.
  9. Corinthians — Fluminense beat Corinthians 2-0 and then drew 2-2, both at the Maracanã, and won the 1952 Copa Rio unbeaten. Austria Wien were beaten in the semi-final.
  10. Zezé Moreira — Zezé Moreira led a side including Didi, Telê and Orlando Pingo de Ouro. He went on to manage more Fluminense games than anyone else (467).

Answers — round 2
  1. Castilho — Goalkeeper Castilho made 699 appearances between 1947 and 1964, ahead of Pinheiro (603) and Telê Santana (556).
  2. Waldo — Waldo scored 319 goals for Fluminense between 1954 and 1961. Fred is second with 199.
  3. Flamengo — On 25 June 1995 Renato Gaúcho turned an Aílton shot in off his belly late in the game against Flamengo. Fluminense won the title by one point, in Flamengo's centenary year.
  4. 3-2 — Fluminense beat Flamengo 3-2 at the Maracanã on 25 June 1995. Renato Gaúcho's late belly goal won the Carioca title.
  5. Romário — Romário's Flamengo lost the 1995 Carioca to Fluminense. He had been named FIFA World Player of the Year for 1994.
  6. Carlos Alberto Parreira — Carlos Alberto Parreira, who won the 1994 World Cup with Brazil, returned to Fluminense to lead the 1999 Série C campaign. He had already won the 1984 Brazilian title with the club.
  7. Copa João Havelange — Fluminense were invited into the Blue Group of the 2000 Copa João Havelange. In 2001 it was decided that every Blue Group club would stay in Série A.
  8. Figueirense — After a 1-1 draw at the Maracanã, Fluminense won 1-0 in Florianópolis to take their first Copa do Brasil. The trophy sent them back to the Libertadores after 23 years.
  9. Renato Gaúcho — Renato Gaúcho returned to coach Fluminense in April 2007 and won the Copa do Brasil on 6 June. He then took the club to the 2008 Libertadores final.
  10. Roger — Roger Machado started at centre-back in the second leg and scored in the third minute of the 1-0 win. It gave Fluminense a 2-1 aggregate win and their first Copa do Brasil.

  1. LDU Quito — LDU Quito won the first leg 4-2, Fluminense won 3-1 at the Maracanã, and LDU won the shootout 3-1. They were the first Ecuadorian club to win the Libertadores.
  2. Thiago Neves — Thiago Neves scored three times at the Maracanã to make it 5-5 on aggregate. The opponents still won the penalty shootout.
  3. Boca Juniors — After a 2-2 draw in Buenos Aires, Fluminense beat holders Boca Juniors 3-1 at the Maracanã to reach their first Libertadores final.
  4. Cuca — Cuca turned to the club's youngsters and, with Fred back from injury, Fluminense escaped relegation. They also reached a continental final that year.

  6. Darío Conca — Argentine playmaker Darío Conca played every league match as Fluminense won the 2010 title. In 2011 he moved to Guangzhou Evergrande.

Answers — round 4
  1. Portuguesa — The STJD took points from Portuguesa and Flamengo for fielding ineligible players. Portuguesa dropped into the bottom four and Fluminense stayed in Série A.
  2. Unimed — Unimed was Fluminense's main investor for about 15 years and helped bring in Conca, Deco, Fred and Washington, among others. The partnership ended in December 2014.
  3. Dynamo Moscow — Thiago Silva nearly died of tuberculosis while at Dynamo Moscow. Coach Ivo Wortmann brought him to Fluminense in January 2006.
  4. O Monstro — Thiago Silva became 'O Monstro' (The Monster) at Fluminense. He won the 2007 Copa do Brasil there before joining AC Milan.
  5. Real Madrid — Real Madrid paid a reported €8 million for Marcelo in January 2007. He returned to Fluminense in 2023 and won the Copa Libertadores.
  6. Olympiacos — After leaving his long-time club in 2022, Marcelo had a five-month spell at Olympiacos. He came back to Fluminense in 2023 and played left-back in the Libertadores final.
  7. Lyon — Fred left Lyon, where he had won three Ligue 1 titles, and scored twice on his Fluminense debut in March 2009.

  1. Internacional — After a 2-2 draw at the Maracanã, Fluminense won 2-1 in Porto Alegre, with Cano scoring late to beat Internacional 4-3 on aggregate.
  2. John Kennedy — Cano opened the scoring, Advíncula equalised, and substitute John Kennedy won it 2-1 in the 99th minute at the Maracanã. Fernando Diniz was the coach.
  3. Al Ahly — Fluminense beat Al Ahly 2-0 in Saudi Arabia and then lost the final 4-0 to Manchester City in Jeddah.
