About Espanyol
Espanyol was founded in Barcelona in October 1900 by a group of university students led by Ángel Rodríguez Ruiz. The club began life as Sociedad Española de Football and became Real Club Deportivo Español after royal patronage in 1912. Goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora was one of its early legends before he left for Real Madrid in 1930.
The club's grounds have their own history. At the old Sarrià ground during the 1982 World Cup, Paolo Rossi scored a hat-trick as Italy beat Brazil 3–2 and knocked them out. Espanyol left Sarrià in 1997 and played at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Montjuïc until 2009. They then opened Cornellà-El Prat in August 2009 with a 3–0 friendly win over Liverpool, and Luis García scored the stadium's first goal.
Europe has brought Espanyol two near misses. Under Javier Clemente they won the first leg of the 1988 UEFA Cup final 3–0, then lost the second leg 3–0 and the shootout to Bayer Leverkusen. In 2007 Ernesto Valverde's side beat Werder Bremen in the semi-finals and drew 2–2 with Sevilla at Hampden Park before losing on penalties. Cup finals at home went better. Paco Flores's team beat Atlético Madrid 2–1 at Mestalla to win the 2000 Copa del Rey, with Raúl Tamudo heading the ball out of the keeper's hands. Miguel Ángel Lotina's side beat Real Zaragoza 4–1 in 2006 to win the club's fourth Copa.
Then there are the derby nights and the transfer stories. Tamudo's late equaliser at Camp Nou in June 2007, the 'Tamudazo', cost Barcelona the title. In February 2009 Iván de la Peña scored both goals in a 2–1 win there, the 'Delapeñazo'. This quiz also covers Mauricio Pochettino, Philippe Coutinho's loan from Inter, Wu Lei's arrival from Shanghai SIPG and the record fee paid to Benfica for Raúl de Tomás. It ends with the 2019–20 season, when Espanyol were relegated while also playing in the Europa League. See how much you really know.
