About Rosenborg
Rosenborg were founded in Trondheim on 19 May 1917 by twelve boys from the Rosenborg neighbourhood. They named the club Odd, after Odd of Skien, then Norway's most successful team. In the 1920s the club joined the Norwegian FA, which would not accept two members with the same name, so it took the name of its founders' neighbourhood and became Rosenborg Ballklub. The first major trophy was the 1960 Norwegian Cup. After a 3–3 draw with Odd, Rosenborg won the replay 3–2, and Eldar Hansen scored five goals across the two matches.
The first league title came in 1967, although Lyn beat Rosenborg 4–1 in that year's cup final. In 1968 Odd Iversen scored 30 goals in 18 league matches, which was a Norwegian top-flight record at the time. English coach George Curtis won the 1969 league with a strongly defensive system. Nils Arne Eggen then led the club to its first league and cup double in 1971, beating Fredrikstad 4–1 in the cup final. Between 1967 and 1990, Rosenborg spent only one season outside the top flight. They went down in 1977 with a single league win, won the second tier in 1978 and came straight back up. In 1985 they won the title with a 1–0 final-day win over Lillestrøm, in front of a Lerkendal-record crowd of 28,569.
Eggen came back for the 1988 season after winning the 1987 league with Moss. He signed Mini Jakobsen and Ørjan Berg from Bodø/Glimt, and Rosenborg won the double that year by beating Brann in the cup final. A second double followed in 1990, with a 5–1 cup final win over Fyllingen. From 1992 to 2004 Rosenborg won 13 Norwegian league titles in a row, a run that Vålerenga ended in 2005. In Europe, a 2–1 win at San Siro in December 1996 knocked AC Milan out and took Rosenborg to the Champions League quarter-finals. In September 2007 they drew 1–1 at Stamford Bridge, and that turned out to be José Mourinho's last match in his first spell as Chelsea manager.
Several players left Trondheim for bigger leagues. Øyvind Leonhardsen joined Wimbledon, Steffen Iversen went to Tottenham Hotspur, Harald Martin Brattbakk to Celtic and Vegard Heggem to Liverpool. John Carew joined Valencia in 2000. Under Erik Hamrén, Rosenborg won the league in 2009 and 2010. Kåre Ingebrigtsen then won doubles in 2015 and 2016, and the 2016 cup final was a 4–0 win over second-tier Kongsvinger. That was part of four straight titles from 2015 to 2018, before Molde won the league in 2019. Test what you know about Rosenborg's history in the quiz below.
