About Bodø/Glimt
The club was founded in Bodø in 1916 simply as Glimt. At its 1948 annual meeting it became Bodø-Glimt, because an older club from Orkdal in Trøndelag already used the name Glimt. The supporters' group Den Gule Horde was organised in 1974, and its symbol is a giant yellow toothbrush. Glimt fans have carried them since the 1970s. The first one broke at Brann Stadion in 1976, and its head is now kept at Nordlandsmuseet. The club's history also runs through families like the Bergs. Harald 'Dutte' Berg, father of Ørjan, Runar and Arild, won 43 caps for Norway and played for FC Den Haag in the early 1970s, between his two spells at Glimt.
Glimt were still in the second tier when they won the Norwegian Cup for the first time. On 26 October 1975 they beat Vard of Haugesund 2–0 at Ullevaal. It was the first cup final ever played by a club from Northern Norway. On the way, 12,041 fans packed Aspmyra to watch them beat Viking 2–1 in the quarter-final. In 1977, their first top-flight season, they finished second in the league and lost the cup final 1–0, both times to Lillestrøm. In the 1978–79 Cup Winners' Cup they beat Union Luxembourg before Inter Milan won the second round 7–1 on aggregate. Under Trond Sollied, who later won two Belgian titles with Club Brugge, the newly promoted side finished second to Rosenborg in 1993 and won the cup with a 2–0 win over Strømsgodset. The next season in Europe they beat Sampdoria 3–2 at home but went out 4–3 on aggregate. Tromsø beat them 2–1 in the 1996 cup final. In 2003 Øystein Gåre took them to second place in both the league and the cup, and he won the Kniksen award as coach of the year.
The road back to the top had plenty of stops. Glimt finished third in the 2007 First Division and went up by beating Odd Grenland in the play-off. They were fourth in 2008 under Kåre Ingebrigtsen, the year Stabæk won the title. Jan Halvor Halvorsen won the 2013 First Division in his first season in charge. Kjetil Knutsen took over in 2018 and built a high-pressing side. They were runners-up to Molde in 2019, then won the club's first ever league title in 2020, with former Air Force fighter pilot Bjørn Mannsverk working on the squad's mentality. Players were sold all through that rise. Jens Petter Hauge went to AC Milan, Philip Zinckernagel to Watford, Kasper Junker to Urawa Red Diamonds and Victor Boniface to Union Saint-Gilloise. Ola Solbakken left for Roma and Albert Grønbæk for Rennes, and Patrick Berg spent half a season at Lens before coming back.
Europe then made Aspmyra famous. In October 2021, José Mourinho's Roma lost 6–1 there in the Conference League group stage. In February 2022 Glimt beat Celtic 5–1 on aggregate, winning 3–1 at Celtic Park. A 2022–23 Europa League group with Arsenal, PSV and Zürich followed. In 2024–25, Red Star Belgrade knocked them out of the Champions League play-off 3–2 on aggregate. Glimt dropped into the Europa League, beat Lazio on penalties in the quarter-final and lost the semi-final to Tottenham Hotspur. This quiz covers all of it, from the toothbrush to the shootout in Rome.
