Turkey's top flight was founded in 1959 as the Milli Lig, uniting the strongest clubs from Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir into a single national league for the first time. Fenerbahçe claimed that inaugural title, and for decades the competition has been dominated by a familiar core of giants. Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş, the three great Istanbul clubs, have shared the overwhelming majority of championships since day one.

Only two sides have broken the big-three grip on the trophy. Trabzonspor stormed to six titles between 1976 and 1984, becoming the first champion from outside Istanbul and earning their place among the historic powers. Decades later, Bursaspor (2009-10) and İstanbul Başakşehir (2019-20) each managed a single surprise crown, brief interruptions in an otherwise metropolitan story.

The table below lists every Süper Lig champion and runner-up in chronological order, from the 1959 season through 2024-25. Galatasaray enter the modern era as the dominant force, sealing a run of consecutive titles and pulling clear at the top of Turkey's all-time honours list.
